Rose Engine Progress
I mentioned in my intro to the forum that I was making a rose engine so here is an update.
The cutter frame is done, or at least working, not sure I am happy with the motor mounted on the compound slide, may have to build an overhead.
The rocking head is coming along with the mandrel in it’s bearings, dust covers & oilers fitted. The box section underneath will hold the dead centre rocking bearing holes when I have welded bits of plate in the holes. I plan on having the index plate & rosettes between the bearings & the pumping spring (seen in the pic) on the outboard end of the mandrel.
More pics here.

Nice work so far. The only thing I noticed is that your index plate won't do multiples of 7. However with the 7 bump rose you made you can press the touch/rubber into it to lock the shaft for that number if needed.
All the best Pete

Looking impressive so far.
And mine's still just a few blocks of MDF and radiata held together by clamps. I really should get back onto building it...

Thanks for the encouragement guys.
Pete - missed that one (never was very good at 'sums', they didn't loom large on the curriculum at Brentside Secondary Modern, did make a cold chisel & a pair of book-ends though!)
Currently trying to decide if the rosette barrel phasing is by fixed detents or worm & wheel. The scrap box turned up a 2-start worm & skew gear but it has 67 teeth, no use to man nor beast. Intend to try & cut a 60 tooth wheel but being a skew gear means the Shaper method I used for the geometric chuck is not on. Never mind, at least I can revert to the fixed detent option if the gear cutting goes ts-up.

Getting on with it slowly, afraid the workshop get the back seat in the summer what with gardening & other commitments (like grandchildren - bless 'em).
Managed a few bits more - decided to use the 67 tooth wheel & worm for the rosette phasing, I can always revert to plan A if is doesn't work out.
The ever faithful scrap box turned up a couple of bronze plain bearings so I turned up a pair of trunnions and now have a rocking head...
The vertical part of the angle will hold a pin to lock the headstock for normal OT work.
I have a 13" x 3/8" steel disc ready for the base plate (I knew it would come in handy one day) now just have to make a pair of rocking stops & a pair of rubber holders and I can see if it works.
The weather forecast looks good for the workshop - rain.....
