Thread: Adelaide: HNT Gordon Smoothing Plane. Gidgee, Tool Steel

Back when there was an Adelaide Woodworking Show, I had the pleasure of spending some time watching Terry use these planes, and chatting with him about all things wooden planes, pitch angles and sharpening. Having been inspired by the man and his tools, I later purchased this Gidgee TS Smoother. But for any number of reasons, it has never quite fit the work I do or the wood I use. Every once in a while I would resharpen the blade (there's something about the tool steel HNT Gordon uses - apart from my Japanese chisels, no other tool I have sharpens so nicely and to such a fine edge) tap away with my little brass/nylon hammer and produce wispy shavings just for the pure joy of it. But then the plane would sit again in my tool cabinet and not see any 'proper' use. Many times I thought of selling it, but I couldn't bear to part with it. Until now. An aspirational purchase is calling, and it's time for this wonderful tool to find a home

The plane is in very good condition and has seen very little use. The blade has been lapped flat and taken up through to 16,000 on very flat Shapton Glass Stones to a mirror like finish, and the hollow ground bevel also sharpened to 16,000. (Bevel will need regrinding in the future)

When I first purchased a HNT smoother, the original plane had a mouth that seemed far too open for fine work. I took it back on these grounds and received this plane which has an incredibly fine mouth, much more in line with its function as a final smoother

There is a small imperfection on the very front left of the sole that I have tried to capture in a photo, but it has no effect on performance at all.
