Default Bill Pentz steel cyclone with 4Hp 20" extractor, VFD, drum, gates, ducts & joiners.

Hi all. I debated long and hard over this one! After a long period of looking, planning, costing, measuring, contemplating, and repeating, I've decided not to go ahead with my home workshop. Main issue has been lack of dedicated space, so I have elected instead to use a pay-to-use style setup near me for the bigger stuff, and instead setup for finishing at home.

Once I had done all my measurements, my 1st job was a dust extraction system. I managed to source one (used), however it has sat in my shed since (about a year or so), and I have never used it sadly. My loss can be your gain.

I will answer as many questions as I can, but please read the ad thoroughly and look closely at photo's (which show dimensions and spec's of parts) before contacting me (if you are a genuine buyer). I would like to clear the space, and now that I have decided to sell, I'd prefer a local buyer who can bring a trailer and pick it up. I have been approached via the forums here by a few great people, however they have been interstate, and it's just too hard! This unit is HEAVY. It is no basic home setup. It is a proper industrial quality unit. You will need a ute/trailer/truck, probably a few runs, and a helper.

    - The cyclone is made in 1.2mm steel. It can be separated into 2 sections if need be for transport via clips, but best to keep it in one piece (as reassembly was fiddly). It is made to exact Pentz spec's.

    - The cyclone was built in Melbourne by a young talented guy with a woodwork business. He originally built it for his home workshop, but then moved into a large premises. It was used there on a large steel frame freestanding support and vented directly outside (no filters). He was running beefy old Wadkin gear, and it did the job easily. He moved on to an industrial level system with full dust collection.

    - The Monarch 3-phase motor is a high quality 4Hp unit, which can be run via the supplied VFD off single phase power (which is how it was previously used). It has a steel-bladed (monster) extractor fan that (I think) is 20".

    - The motor is mounted in a heavy-duty steel frame and thick MDF bracing. It is very heavy, so will require a strong frame support. I had planned, for example, to suspend it from roof joists.

    - Supplied is a large steel drum with a rubberised sealed inlet, and a sealed removable lid. Ideally, you will need to make a lift system so the drum can be elevated (about 10-15cm would do it) into place, and later lowered (probably onto a trolley arrangement) to remove and empty. There is no obligation to use this particular drum, but I have been warned that the system is really efficient, so your drum will fill up!

    - There are loads of PVC duct, angled joiners, flexi hose to go to your machines, and a bunch of steel blast gates supplied with it. Take the lot!

I will add more photo's if the system lets me! Please see my (basic) drawings for how much space the unit requires. The best part is, it only really takes up the area that is the footprint of the drum. Also note that there is NO FILTRATION. If you are in a position to do so, this system will work best if allowed to vent directly outside. Of course, any appropriate filters can be added.

    PLEASE NOTE CAREFULLY:

    - I HAVE NOT RUN THIS SYSTEM. I have no reason to think it should be anything but awesome. I have no experience with VFD's, but I believe the VFD should be programmed and ready to go. I assume you could also run the system off 3-phase directly. I am no expert, so cannot give electrical advice. I will leave this to the buyer. I encourage you to please do your own homework and seek your own help on the electricals.

-I will not separate anything, as my goal here is to clear space. This is perfect for someone wanting a full solution to a dust extraction system.

I'm pretty sure I'm asking what I paid for it to be able to move it on.
Pickup is in THORNBURY VIC 3071 (inner North of Melbourne)
I can help load at my end, but unlikely to be in a position to hep with transport.

The dimensions on the drawings are not readable. Can you take a larger sized photo so that the images can be magnified and the dimensions read?

Ah sorry! Here's a slap-up (far from scale!) showing the sort of space you'll need. Remember you'll need a bit spare so you can raise and lower the barrel into place to clear the bottom of the cyclone to remove, and to lift back into place to seal. This equates to about 50mm min.

The motor & rotor housing is a box approx 700x700x200. The motor protrudes above it by about 330 (it's a beast). On the back-side of this housing is a hefty steel bracket, which sits about 400 up from the back of the box. It is supported by 45deg steel brackets. Note that any of this steel bracket can be changed. Right now, it's ready to be wall mounted and will easily support everything.

So you need about 2700 height to work with, and about the 630 diameter round footprint of the barrel. As mentioned, my plan was to put the barrel on some sort of dolly that could use a foot pump to go up and down (would need maybe 80mm travel to be certain). I recall finding mechanisms online where you could build something to this effect.

    Cheers! Mat

An inch more or less is very significant at those diameters in terms of the air volume it can move.

Could you please put a ruler in there and measure from the centre of the shaft out to the end of a fin to provide a radius, which we can double to get the diameter?

    Thanks

    Sorry again. Radius is 200mm = 7.9" (thus a 16' fan)

    Thanks for that Mat.

Looking at that photo of the impeller it looks like it is the 16" from Clearview Max, so that coupled with the Powertran, the 4hp motor and the Pentz design tinny on 6"ducting should give as good a performance as you are going to be able to buy for small workshop use currently here in Australia .

With that 16" impeller you could run it at a lower Hz for single open gate use, which would lower the noise level being vented outside if that is an issue for anyone where they are.

And, at higher Hz, it is going to cope with several gates open at a time off a larger diameter trunk duct. Ideal for the likes of woodworking clubs and men's sheds.

I'm would jump at it for our local men's shed if it weren't for having two Pentz designed cyclones already, albeit without the 16"impeller.

    Great buy for somebody!

Lots of interest but no firm takers yet. Get in touch with reasonable offers! Would rather sell here than other you-know-where places!! Sing out with any questions. Mat

I have posted the following over in the Dust Extraction Forum.

    Pentz cyclone over in marketplace

Hopefully that raises more interest in your offering.

    All the best with that.

Thanks guys. Yes I've had most interest from interstate, along with a few locals (but locals yet to commit). They don't come up often - you're right. Took me ages to find this one, but then I changed plans!! Anyway, would be worth a trip, but definitely need enough carrying capacity for all the ducts and so on in addition to the main vac unit......
