    Default Brese infill smoother

For sale is a Brese infill smoother. Just 6 1/2" in length, and much authority (it has some heft).

This began as a kit plane which Ron Brese was offering around 2005/6 (Ron also offered these in ready built). The kit comprise the metal work - an assembled O1 body, blade and lever cap - and you were invited to install the infill yourself (which was not supplied). Final file work was also up to you.

The plane was essentially a copy of the this plane by Karl Holtey ...

For the Brese version I used Ebony as an infill. This plane kit was also custom made for me, with a 60 degree bed (like HNT Gordon), and O1 steel sides (all others were made with brass sides) and a brass lever cap screw (the kit offered steel). It is the only one of its kind. I just liked the idea of "black and silver".

    Here it is ...

Of note is the rounded or curved top to the infill, unlike the Brese or Holtey versions. I did this for ergonomic reasons - just more comfortable to hold.

The blade is 1 1/2" wide 7/32" thick O1 steel.

It needs to be said that I have not used the plane much, which is why it still looks so new. I am selling it because I am have been cutting back on my tools in preparation for a home move in a couple of years. Why did I not use it much? It is just not my style. I prefer quite low planes, and this is more along the lines of traditional vintage infill planes, where the sides are higher.

The plane works well, as I shall demonstrate. Setting it up is easy - just drop the blade in and tighten the lever cap. Because the blade is narrow - it is a small smoother - the bevel benefits from relief at the corners and attention to setting the blade square (with a few hammer taps).

The O1 blade sharpens easily. Personally, I would consider making a HSS blade for this plane (as Terry Gordon recommends): high angle planes are fantastic at minimising tearout, however the high cutting angle also is apt to dull a blade more quickly than a lower cutting angle (but, of course, the lower angle will not avoid tearout as easily).

    In hard Jarrah ...

In hard US Hard Maple (Rock Maple) ...

If you could purchase this plane today, ready built (however they are no longer available), Ron Brese would charge you over $2000 USD.

My price is $550. Postage extra.

    Regards from Perth

AH. Came for the photos. Did not fail. Tool pure Tool .

Auto incorrect. Nobody had set the algorithms for context.

Third sentence should read "Tool Pxxx pure Tool Pxxx." Where shockingly, attack of the vapors, Pxxx is the single biggest category on the internet.

As I am serious about selling this plane, wonderful as it is, here is a price drop: $495 (postage extra).

This is really a great little polishing plane.

    Hi Derek,
How would this plane do with a shooting board? Are the sides square to the sole?
    Thanks,
    Bryan

    Hi Bryan

The sides are square. However, this is not designed for a shooting board: it is small/short, like a block plane size. And the bed/cutting angle is 60 degrees. It would be great for shooting the long/edge grain of a box side, but not ideally suited for end grain (it would cut it with a sharp blade, but you really want a low cutting angle). This plane is designed for finish smoothing smaller panels, especially those with complex grain.

Wow. Wish I got here earlier. I don't need another plane but that was a heck of a deal.

Wouldn't be surprised if you got at least double at overseas.

Thanks Derek, it arrived safely this morning.
It looks beautiful, I think that you may have understated the heft that it has. I can't wait to give it a try.
I was a bit disappointed with your packaging.... there were no dovetails on the cardboard box!
    Thanks again
