Everything must go

Hi everyone.
I'm giving up brick n tile living and going off grid for the remainder of my days so everything I can't take with me (which is just about everything I own) has to go.

Just a little background. I'm currently, what could be loosely termed, domiciled in a 1 bedroom Government Pensioner unit after falling out with a pig of a landlord at Marlo. With me is all my remaining machinery, tools, wood, books, mags and sundry paints, stains &c. As a result, not only can't I swing a cat but would be hard-pressed to swing a mouse in the dump. Haven't seen my dog for week but she's here somewhere I know it...

I have no room to do what I love doing (can't even play my guitars without the near-death miserable old farts in the other units complaining to the housing dept) so after 12 months of misery, I've given up. I loathe living in this dog-box and have decided to downsize to a Toyota HiAce Van and go where its warm (and with lots of fish to hunt and gather) for the rest of my life or until my mobility has gone. Hopefully, the money from selling my stuff will fund the van fit-out.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be sorting and photographing everything that I'm selling and uploading to my OneDrive Account. If its ok with HWMBO (that's Neil

) I'll post a link to the picture folder which I will open to the forum so everyone can see what I've got then PM me if you find something you want. PLEASE NOTE:Each folder will contain a different category of items and each item will be numbered for easy ID by me and the buyer.

I've chosen to do it this way because although most of the stuff is tools, some is wood, personal possessions, luthiers tools, fixings (e.g. solid brass screws - slotted 2" & 3" x 14#), nails, screws etc (philips head and square drive) woody type books and mags and its too much bother posting so many pics in the thread.
Everything HAS to go so the asking prices will be low but fair.

Pick-up or posting will be stipulated with pictures and will be at buyers cost.

Anyway, that's it for now. Keep your eyes peeled over the coming weeks.

When its all done and dusted I'll be shutting down my internet account so these next few posts will be my last when everything or most has been disposed of.

Wow Mike. What a tragic story. Bad landlords can have such a detrimental effect on vulnerable peoples lives.

That said, i am looking forward to being able to contribute to your "my side of the mountain" fund (loved that book as a kid) and eagerly await your listings.

So, rule out returning to Tasmania, for you.

May I suggest that you keep a small selection of tools, you never know when you might find time, in your wanders, to carve a tree branch while watching the sunset over a body of water . . .

That's a rotten situation to be in sir, a bloke needs a shed and a hobby.
I hope you can work out some way of keeping a little to continue to enjoy your woodwork!

where ever you go there are always community workshops, not mens sheds, but places where you go pay a weekly fee and use whatever they have to build make whatever you want.

I know a couple who wanted to travel Australia, so bought a camper van, thought they should redo the curtains and bought a sewing machine, didnt know how to work it, googled and visited SANE.....3 months later the camper had been completely striped out, all cabinetry inside redone, a massive vinyl map of Aust done at SANE plastered onto inside roof and away they went.

Fabulous places so got carried away there.

What a situation.
Is there no tenant protection association in Australia?
We had that in Switzerland, helped us with a f... w.. of a landlord.

In this country, tenants don't count. In Victoria, if you have a dispute, you can take it to VCAT for a resolution. In my case I couldn't get to the hearing as it was over 200klm away and the only transport was via train - which wouldn't have arrived until 2 hours after the Tribunal Hearing began. I arranged with some useless VCAT clerk for a telephone conference call to give my side of the dispute - which was confirmed by email. VCAT didn't ring at the appointed time on the day. I sat by the phone from 1.00 pm until 6 pm on the appointed day. I figured it must have been adjourned. Rang VCAT and they claimed no record of the telephone arrangement. Its a con. Setup to protect landlords. Three weeks later I got a notice saying they had found against me and awarded the mongrel landlord $300 for cleaning up. Nothing for him to do as I cleaned the place up before I left. Yep, the landlord from hell. The last of 11 moves I've had in 14 years (only 1 of which was by choice - the first one). Does anyone wonder why I've given up. Sorry Mods - off topic but I have to vent...

So bloody annoying for you, you have my sympathy. Maybe if you can keep an Interweb account you could do a tour round oz stopping with different forumites, like Dai Sensai did a few years back?

Is there someway you could move to another part of the country, and make enough to continue doing what you love doing? Perhaps also produce something to sell?
I have no problem with your plan to go off grid except that you are giving up that you love doing. Obviously a difficult choice for you so I guess you have thought it all through. I just wonder if there is some town with a shortage of people where you could do what you love and sell stuff.

We all die alone and in poverty and it's only getting worse.
The cost of living just keeps going up.
Social isolation, divorce or spouse death compounds the problem.
Everyone is too busy, just trying to keep head above water.
One minor problem like job lose, unpaid bill, late with the rent and you can go under.
50% of Australians do not have even 3 months worth of savings for emergencies.

Thumbsuckers right. None of us is more than a few weeks or maybe months from destitution. It's a sobering thought. Maybe we all need to take stock of what we need. Sheddy's case is considerably compounded by several other issues, most not of his own making. It's a sad world we live in, very sad.
