Fair enough but another advantage of buying from this site are the interesting bods you get to meet and put a face to other members.
Must say I’ve met a few ok people thru evilpay and dumtree also.

From my experience the members on this forum are not only generally very helpful, but there's also very little to none of the uncalled for nastiness prevalent on many other forums.

A good reason not to allow items for sale on other sites as well is the time a few years ago when I said I would buy an item, the seller and I made a time and he told me his address and I drove and hour and a half to pick it up.
I arrived to see the item on the back of a ute leaving the seller's driveway.
Someone had called him on his Gumtree ad and he told him to come too - in case I didn't turn up.
This happened half an hour before our scheduled meeting when I had already been on the road for an hour.
Three hour round trip for nothing.
The upside was that I found a great quality identical item a fortnight later for $150 cheaper.
That's just ONE of the times I have been caught out in the marketplace by people not following the rules.I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

That is why deposits are paid. Nothing worse than chasing half way across the country on an open ended contract to find someone else had got there first and you don't have a leg to stand on. If you are concerned about forwarding money to an unknown, the amount can be kept to a minimum but none the less still binding.

No - that's why the Marketplace has the rules that it has. The problem occurred because someone did not obey the rules.
It's 10 am on a Saturday morning and I have posted "I'll take it". By 10:30 I have spoken to the seller on the phone and an agreement was reached for me to pick it up between 12 and 12:30.
If we agreed on a deposit I might as well have brought it with me because a bank transfer would not have shown up before Monday anyway.
You say a deposit is enforceable. How? Even if he got it straight away and still sold it to someone else, I would have to rely on his good nature to get my deposit back.
How much do you think it would cost me (in time and effort as well as money) to try to get a $100 deposit back from someone who has already proven he has no respect for rules and fair play?
Did you even think before you posted that?I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

Bank transfers used to be slow, the new payment fast payments infrastructure in Aus is great. I use PayID with commbank app, transfer the money in near real time, confirmation of the receiver's name before sending, perfect for making a deposit

You're missing doug3030's point - it's not how convenient a deposit is or isn't, it's the trustworthiness of the seller. If the seller is willing to double deal and sell to someone else when they've agreed to sell to you, how trustworthy are they? If you put a deposit down, what good is it if they pretend it never happened or just flat out refuse to give it back to you? If it's a sale over Gumtree or the like, you're relying on the seller's goodwill if you send them money before you get the item. Yes, there are recourse's available if you don't receive the item but they aren't guaranteed - and just how much time and energy are you going to place into getting your deposit back?

They still are slow generally. I'm with St George and if I transfer money to someone it can take up to 2 business days. On rare occasions if I do it early enough in the morning it might appear the next day. Similarly, transfers in take at least one business day for me.
cheers, Ian

I see on St George's website its 'coming soon', just make sure to use PayID when it becomes available (and convince the receiver to set it up to get their money straight away) and you'll get fast transfers.
Alkahestic, I've already said how I feel about the rule, I don't think I'm going to convince doug otherwise so I didn't address the point.

I could ask you the same question.
Rules are for honest people. The dishonest either use them to their own advantage or just blatantly disregard them. I m not saying there should be no rules - I support the idea but I am not all that surprised when the system fails. Horse traders are horse traders, no matter what you dress them in. There is no legal obligation for a seller to hold an article unless a contract or deposit has been paid. It's that simple mate. Personally, I would be quite happy to wait the agreed time for the first prospective buyer, assuming there was no great urgency to sell. But as I said in an earlier post, the need to sell may be desperate and expediency becomes paramount. The old adage of, "First in best dressed" is the general rule with most traders and that is closely followed by, "You can only sell it once." Or "Put your money where your mouth is."
I have spent my entire working life negotiating sales, from online day to day purchases to million dollar contracts. My word is my bond. But unlike you , I am not naive enough to think that some list of unenforceable rules are going to protect me from less than ethical traders.
There is no need to get nasty, I think you will find the Courts are quite prepared to act on a broken contract. If you are concerned about the amount of lost time to pursue that avenue you may wish to run the risk and so be it. I can understand that. But don't expect for one moment that you have any legal ground to stand on when you arrive to find the item long gone. So there is not much use bleating about love gone wrong. Like you, I have been less than happy with some peoples take on ethics when it comes to negotiation but I am also a realist.
And yes, I did think before I posted this.

We get a lot of people sending us a remittance indicating it has been paid and that we should send the goods out because they want them asap.
This may have come out of their account but does not show up till the next day in our account, even if it is the same bank.
We wait till it is cleared and not pending before we send out goods
This is the same with credit cards, you lose your money straight away in your account but still not in ours till the next day.
