    Default Handcrafted Mallets

Some handcrafted mallets from my workshop that I hope you like.

This mallet is perfect for adjusting Planes. It has a Sheoak and Victoria Ash handle with a highly polished solid brass handcrafted head, Weight is 295 Grams and it's 150mm in length. Price is $75 and includes standard postage within Australia.

A Sheoak Carvers mallet, basic 3 piece design but a solid sturdy mallet with the very distinctive Sheoak grain pattern. Weight is 400gms and length is 230mm. The early settlers were used to familiar European wood species and compared many of the Australian timbers to those they were familiar with. Sheoak was similar to European Oak but was a weaker timber hence the She Oak title. Price for this mallet is $65 including postage

This mallet is probably my favourite. Made with a 3 piece Huon Pine head with Blackwood inserts (check the closeness of the growth rings on the end grain I counted 10 per centimetre which equates to 65 years for the tree just to grow this piece of timber) The handle is also Tasmanian Blackwood with brass inserts. The handle is shaped to provide two handgrips, one at the base for the full force of the mallet and the top one for more delicate work. Weight is 350gms and length is 230mm. To protect the ends (if it is ever used in anger) there are 2 x 6mm leather covers. On a similar mallet I use a Hot glue gun to stick the leather and remove it when the task is finished. Price is $115 including postage.

All my work comes with a lifetime guarantee (unfortunately its my lifetime and I'm hitting 70 this year so maybe not that good a deal) but if you're not happy return the item and I'll refund the purchase price
    Cheers Dave

Well done on all three mallets. I can't help but wonder about the third mallet. Don't you think that Huon Pine might be a little soft for a mallet?

    Thanks Section 1
Huon Pine is a fairly soft timber but it's also pretty robust (much sought after timber for boatbuilding in Tassie).
The size of this mallet will preclude really heavy use and with the leather on the mallet facings Huon Pine is certainly tough enough for the job. I have used a similar one in the shed for several years and while I only use it with 10mm chisel or smaller it has stood up to the work admirably.
