Thread: Infill planes (SOLD)

I've been busy for much of the year writing a manual on metal plane-making, and made several extra planes to test ideas and use up some leftovers. To reduce clutter & recoup materials costs, I'd like to sell these off. They are are all good working planes, not quite in the Holtey class, perhaps, but all presentable enough, I think, & certainly capable of doing fine work. Most have screw adjusters, a couple don't, but it should be obvious from the pics.

P1. Palm plane $65.

Brass and steel with Ebony infill; 95mm sole with a 25mm HSS blade.
This little plane is slightly longer, but with the same width blade as the Stanley 100. It can be pushed or pulled depending on circumstances. A handy tool for delicate jobs.

Brass & steel with (Macassar) Ebony infill & wedge. 125mm long with 41mm blade.
This plane is modelled on the Norris A28, which was typically bull-nosed, but I’ve given this one a distinct toe, so it’s more equivalent to a block plane. It has a 15 degree bed & the sole was made in two pieces to create a fine mouth. The blade is an A2 Mujingfang block-plane blade, which takes & retains a good edge.

Brass & steel with Gidgee infill, body length 175mm with 41mm O1 Veritas blade and Veritas adjuster. This is another exploration of what to do with the Veritas small plane kit. It is roughly the size of a Stanley #2, and at 1.2kg, slightly heavier. The blade is bedded at standard pitch (45 deg.). The Veritas adjuster is fiddly, due to its coarse threads, but once set, this plane is capable of very fine work.

Brass & steel with Blackwood infill, body length 170mm with 38 x 6mm thick HSS blade.
This plane has the same body as the one above, but has a single-iron blade bedded at 60 deg. I’m not 100% certain the infill is A. melanoxylon, but it is certainly a dense, dark, fine textured Acacia that took a good polish.

In the normal bevel-down configuration, it can handle difficult grain very well, but to deal with particularly recalcitrant woods, you can reverse the blade to turn it into a scraper. With blade reversed, it put a good surface on this piece of Ringed Gidgee, and if you’ve ever worked with this stuff you’ll know that’s a pretty good recommendation. 60 deg as scraper.jpg

P5. ½” Shoulder Plane, $85
Ringed Gidgee infill, Mujingfang A2 blade, 110mm sole length, 140mm overall, weight 382g.
This is a handy little plane for delicate work. The A2 blade takes & holds a good edge.

P6. 1 inch Shoulder Plane, $140
Gidgee infill, Mujingfang A2 blade, sole length180mm , 220mm overall, weight 1.56kg.
Gidgee makes excellent infill material due to its density & stability & its ability to take a very fine finish. The straight-grained wood isn’t as spectacular as the “ringed” variety, but this is a very nice, tight-grained example, with a fine fiddleback figure & golden highlights. This is a substantial tool that will comfortably handle most jobs a shoulder plane would be asked to do in routine cabinet-making.

P7. ¾” Shoulder Pane, (slightly) used $65
Mulga infill, Mujingfang A2 blade, sole length 175mm (205mm overall), weight 993g.
This is the plane I made to illustrate my AWR article on making laminated shoulder planes. It is a perfectly good plane, but I've since made a couple of others with ringed Gidgee infill, so my original doesn't match. So I made another one & ‘retired’ this original. The body is in mint condition (I re-polished the sides), and the blade has probably been sharpened three or four times, so it’s almost a new plane, but I have used it occasionally, so feel bound to sell it as ‘second hand’…
