M2 HSS plane iron for No 4, 5 planes
Some years ago an enterprising forum member had manufactured ,acquired, machined , the whole process, plane irons, various sizes for standard Stanley type planes, and made them available to forum members, I purchased 2 , M2 HSS, high wear resistance, selling one, fits Stanley type 4&5 planes with matching cap iron, plane iron 3mm thick, the cap screw is machined to fit Stanley cap irons so you can if desired retain your Stanley cap iron, has had very little use , original grind , sharp to 1 micron diamond paste, asking $45 plus postage , plane not included, photo to demonstrate that it fits Stanley plane, thanks Ross

Hello Ross, you've sold the blade but I'm some what curious, I also purchased one of these blade back when they were offered, but could not get mine to fit in my #6 plane without taking a substantial amount out of the mouth of the plane, so it has sat in a draw all these years,

Hi Chipbreaker
Ross will answer, but the reason for your issue is that this HSS blade is 3mm thick, which is greater than a standard Stanley blade (around 2mm thick). Some Stanley planes can manage 3mm thick blades, while others cannot (unless you open the mouth of the plane slightly). Your plane may have an even smaller-than-usual mouth.

I understand why it never fitted but at the time these were being made up it was never made clear that it would be necessary to widen the mouth of the plane which I was not willing to do. Anyway I wasn't bothered by it then nor am I today but was always curious if anyone else had the same expectations as I did

Yes Chipbreaker more than a few years back i bought the same/similar thing offered by Hock tools and got the same surprise when it wouldn't fit the the mouth of the plane that it was bought for.

Ian, are you back in Canada (Vancouver?)? Seems so ... recovering ... recovered?
And here am I, in Sydney for the weekend ... Lynndy and I spending a couple of days with our son and his girlfriend. Just about to leave for Bondi for brunch.
HSS is a good steel, not as good as PM-V11, but great for a #605, for which I keep a couple of blades with different cambers.
Best regards from Perth .. uh .. Sydney

Hi Derek
Actually I'm back in Alberta. Still "recovering". I'm currently tapering down my medication. I have another week and a bit to go with the taper, then it'll be 6 weeks before I can start driving. All up it will be 9 months after the crash before I can start driving again.
I'm told that it might be 3 years before the recovery is mostly complete.
I'm back in Sydney early November to see my doctors for the next set of check ups.
Enjoy Bondiregards from Alberta, Canada

Derek / Ian,
If you are coming to Sydney can you give some advanced warning?
Arranging a kidnapping from the airport so i can learn your skills takes a bit of time to pull together, although others on this forum no doubt would volunteer to help....

Adam

Hi Chipbreaker, , the irons fitted the mouths of my 4 and turner 5 tho a little work was needed on the advancing knob or filing the opening for it. It was early days for me and I had limited sharpening skills and I had the impression the original irons were sub standard, they certainly weren't sharp. now they are and perform well. the HSS irons are very good, also good value and would have been a huge undertaking to create, thanks Ross
