Meber SR600 Bandsaw
Hi all,
I'm putting up for sale my Meber SR600 bandsaw. I bought it couple of years ago as a project, and then completely failed to find the time to work on it. Instead I've now bought one that the work's already been done on, and will pass the Meber onto someone with the time and inclination to show it some love.
I'll be upfront and say it's absolutely not ready to use as is - it's most definitely a project, but one that should yield the current equivalent of a $3000-4000 machine. I'll list all the specs, pros and cons I can think of - let me know if there's anything else you need to know.
I'm asking $800 inc GST (it's owned by my business). I'm in Doncaster, VIC.
The current saw I can find that most closely matches its stats is this: W429 - BP-630 Wood Band Saw | Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse
General stats:
Wheels: just under 600mm
Throat: 575mm approx
Resaw 360mm
Dimensions: 2060H x 1050W x 700D
Main table dimensions: 680W x 580D
Motor: Nameplate shows 240V, 12.5A, 2000W, which doesn't make sense to me. Surely should be 3000W? Anyway, it has a 15A plug and is single phase.
Wheels
The wheels have flat rubber tyres glued on. They seem in reasonable condition, although I'd planned to put crowned urethane ones on. The blade moves around a small amount, but that could also be to do with gunk on the blade. The wheel bearings are probably recent, and the wheels spin beautifully
Height and tilt adjustment for the upper wheel work well.
Fence
Has a cast iron fence that seems to holds itself in position pretty well.
Table
Cast iron table, pretty decent in terms of flatness. Has a mitre slot. Has a freely functioning tilt mechanism, with a stop for 90 degrees. There are screw adjustments for overall positioning of the table. The original plastic zero clearance insert is knackered, but it has a nice rectangular spot to put a new one in plus adjustment screws.
Guides
As with all old saws, the guides need attention, but there's a decent basis to work from. The thrust bearings need replacing. The side guides all move, but not particularly freely. I'm unsure if there's a bearing inside the side guides that can be replaced, or if you redo the whole part. The main casting of the lower guide is currently siezed onto its shaft, and so can't be adjusted in and out. The whole assembly is easily removable though.
Motor
The motor sounds a little bit noisy, but seems to run well, with the band removed. Unsurprisingly, it trips my 10A circuit with the band looped on (the motor has a 15A plug, but is also connected to a dodgy 15A-10A lead). The small switch turns the motor on; not sure how the emergency stop is wired.
Other
The saw has a mechanical brake for the lower wheel, a brush and a 100mm dust port in the lower cabinet.
Please feel free to ask for any more info.
Cheers,
Ben

I have a Meber 500 sl smaller. Having used it for cutting hard desert woods for many years I would not part with it for double that amount. Mine is sl underpowered with a 1.5 HP Eur motor but i love it. If I was younger (and not downsizing) or starting out cutting tough woods, this would make a good project for restoration and use. Basic but strong and well built. Just my endorsement for Meber Band saws.

I would love to have that machine, but the freight charges up to here would kill me.

Update: I'll give it a couple more days here at $700, then will try elsewhere before dropping the price further.
Also, if anyone local is contemplating it, I'll pull off the wheels, table and motor, and two of us should be able to personhandle it onto whatever you've got.
Cheers!

Interested,
However can't get down south until next year at the earliest and postage would be killer.
Trying to organise something at the moment.
