Default Rare Solid Rosewood Plow Plane

Here’s something to spice up life on the forum and break up the monotony of an endless stream of router bits and Taiwanese machinery. This is a super rare plow plane in solid rosewood with boxwood arms and nuts by Ward & Fletcher New York. It’s a thing of beauty as you can see. Condition is very good with threaded arms in particularly good shape but there are three apologies to note.

1 The wedge is a crappy replacement. It deserves better which was my intention when I bought this in the USA over 20 years ago but alas life got in the way.
    2. There is a very old repair to one boxwood arm. It has been repaired many many decades ago (before my time) with a screw and the screw head has been puttied (per photo)
    3. There is a sliver off the top of the tote. Not that noticeable but it’s there.

Despite these points it’s a wonderful example of a super rare plane. The figure and colour of the rosewood is magnificent. Asking $400 including postage in Oz which I think is very fair for a plane such as this and certainly less than I paid all those years ago

    Nice plane Flindersia .
    Tempting .

What is the shaping around the bottom of the handle .
Was it shaped that way when made or is that damage ? And is that the head of a screw I can see?

And what is the makers name on the blade and how wide is it ? It just came to you with the one blade did it?

Hi Auscab. There’s nothing untoward going on at the base of the handle. It’s actually a very nice shaped cyma recta and fillet. Totally original. The iron that came with it when I bought it is a Moulson Brothers #3.

Looks original but I couldn’t be certain. There is only the single iron.

A few more photos to answer your questions and show the beauty of the rosewood.
