Default The Rarest Turner Bench Plane - Turner No 5-1/2 - New in Box

This is the hardest Turner to find in any condition, as so few 5-1/2 planes were made by the company.
The fact that this one is unused in its original box with associated paperwork makes it possibly unique.
The plane is basically as it left the factory, showing no signs of use.
There are some age stains on the grey iron casting, but not very many.
The box must have been taped closed at some point as there is evidence of where the tape was applied, but the tape is long gone.

Okay, so price? That has been difficult to work out.
The more common number 7 in well used condition sold recently for $355
I don't expect that another Turner 5-1/2 in collector condition will appear anytime soon - if ever.
Of the short list of holy grails of collectable Australian made planes, the Turner Number 5-1/2 sits somewhere near the top.
    $550. Postage is extra
Message me if this interests you.

    Kind regards
    Tom

Wow that really is a time warp.
Turner were taken over by Stanley after they got into trouble during the credit squeeze in 1960.
So this is 60 years old give or take a few.
I’m not knocking it but it also proves beyond any argument that the 2 3/8” sized Australian produced planes had a die cast frog. Turner in particular.
I’d seen a full range of 4 and 5s with the pot metal frogs from 1981 onwards but only recently a die cast 2 3/8” frog on it’s own, it had a Turner stamped lateral lever.

I've never seen an unused historical tool up close before. Some say that "vintage" is 20 years old and "antique" is 40 years old while others say nothing less than 100 years. I'm not sure under which category this plane would fall, but I am sure that it's either of the two and in mint condition. I think it would be a crying shame for this plane ever to be put in use. It's a rare Australian made product that should be preserved and I think there's no better place to do that than in a museum.

I would imagine that ,to a collector, it would be worth considerably more than the asking price. Dave Stanton who works at Carbatec collects Turners, he would know.

    Default I am interested

    Good afternoon Scribbly Gum
I am interested in both Turner planes but wish to ask a few questions. Is it possible you can PM your details to me so that we can talk over the phone as I have quite a few enquiries.
I hope this post falls within the parameters of market rules on this forum. My apologies if not compliant as I'm not sure how to make contact with the vendor.
    Regards
    Anthony

Hi Anthony, I have just checked the forum rules and here is a re-print of the protocol:
All correspondence between Buyers and Sellers is to be done in the thread, NOT by PM.
PMs' and Emails are ONLY to be used for exchanging personal contact information and only when the deal has been done between buyer and seller.

If you want to buy the item enter "I'll take it" if you need more info ask for more info in the thread not via PM.

Essentially all discussion is meant to be transparent so that others can see the information and who said that they will take it first.
I think there were problems when conversations happened out of the public eye causing confusion as to who said what first etc
So you will have to type in your queries in the thread, and I have to respond there as well.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers
    Tom
