    Default Back saws (SOLD)

These are some leftovers from a batch of backsaws I made using 1095 plate. It has been claimed that 1095 steel makes superior saw blades that hold their edges longer than older saws. I can't say I've noticed it is hugely better than any other good saw plate I've used, but it's at least as good as any of them.

    The saws are as follows:

S1. 225mm dovetail saw, thin plate (0.015”) 15tpi rip, American black walnut handle. $90
This saw has a high hang-angle grip which makes it suited to sawing with the cutting point about level with your elbow. The saw bolts are ‘modern’ domed style. e Blk W_nut mod.jpg

    S2. 250mm carcase saw, 0.020” plate, 12tpi x-cut, river oak handle. $100
This saw is meant for cross-cutting at bench height, and the hang-angle of the grip is lifted a little to make it more comfortable to use at a lower height. a River oak 12tpi Xcut.jpg

    S3. 300mm tenon saw, 0.025” plate, 12tpi, swamp oak handle. $110
Swamp oak is a Western Australian casuarina, with rays that look like tiny eyes. As is typical of the casuarinas , it finishes very nicely. It will darken considerably as it ages. c Swamp oak.jpg

Bugger, just missed it. I’ll take 1 and 3 if Derek doesn’t end up grabbing them.

Lovely looking saws Ian , the only shame is that they are all gone straight away!

    IanW: those are amazing.

With much respect, for next time, I think you are perhaps underpricing those.

If you end up with other leftovers like those I would love to place an order. Truely beautiful.

I have been looking for 1095 steel every where but to no avail. Did you get this locally or from states?

Nice to see a sample of Swamp Sheoak (Casuarina Obesa). I'll be planting a couple of hundred of these down by the creek at the back of my property primarily to stabilise some boggy ground and secondarily to provide some nice wood to play with. I like what I'm seeing, now I'll have to wait ten years until my plan comes to fruition.

Lovely saws by the way, you're a bit of a bloody artist mate.

I got it through (Amazon), so I assume it came from the US, but it only took a couple of weeks to arrive. With postage, it cost $Au105 delivered to my door. I think the $ was up a bit that week, but price is going to vary a few % according to exchange rates. I got 8 usable blades out of the pack (two sheets are too thin for saw blades at 0.010" & 0.005" respectively), so it cost me a bit over $13 per saw, which is tolerable, I reckon.

    Cheers,
    IW

Thanks Ian. Beautiful saws, and some great tuition in how to use them.
