Set of 10 Japanese Chisels

I have for sale a set of 10 JP chisels. I don't know a great deal about them other than I bought them from Japan several years ago and have only used them very lightly.They would suit a buyer looking for a new set at this entry level. In fact the four largest chisels have never been used. The backs could stand a touch more flattening, which I estimate would take a couple of minutes per chisel, but I have not trouble to do this as they were quite sharp enough for my purposes anyway.

My take on them is that they are probably entry level to this genre, but that is a little unkind as it puts them on a similar footing to s Stanley Fat Max, which of course they are not. I am not sure how the Japanese would describe them. They are a general purpose chisel so would probably come in as the category oire-nomi or bench chisels, However, if I have got this wrong I am very happy for somebody to correct me.

The handles are Japanese Red oak and bound by a steel ferrule at the top. A couple of ferrules are a little loose and in the past I glued two more ferrules in place so they were not lost. I think it is a problem of being where we live and the dryness resulting in a little more shrinkage. The smallest chisel (3mm) is not quite straight when sighted down the length. I think a result of the forging process as it was like that from when I took delivery. I also believe the chisels to be hand forged rather than mass produced. They are not however a "signature" set ( or I would be asking $165 for each chisel or more likely not selling them

Included is a chrome leather tool roll and some of the chisels have a small plastic cover that sits inside the individual pocket to protect the tips or really to stop the chisel escaping through the leather. (I think a couple or maybe three are missing).

I am asking $165 for the set of 10 with free postage anywhere in Australia. Anywhere other than Australia please contact me for a price, but I will deduct the equivalent Aussie postage from overseas shipping. I am placing them on the Forums until the New Year at which time, if they have not sold, I will put them on Ebay at a higher price.

None of the chisels have been sharpened more than three times, but I sharpened all of them today (even those I have never used - don't know why

). I am offloading them because, even as chronic hoarder I can't justify four sets of chisels plus numerous sundry chisels and I am expecting a new set in the post any day now. All of them are user sets. Besides which, if I start collecting chisels, I will have to wind back on the hand saws (Note to self: remember to look up meaning of "wind back.")

The chisel sizes are as follows. Please note that there is some slight irregularity in the sizing which lends support to them being hand forged. For me it has an added appeal but if you want your 3mm chisel to be exactly 3mm or the 41mm chisel to be exactly 40mm and the 9mm chisel to be 10mm, this set is not for you

That's what my wife said. It's funny how she who does not know which end of a tool to hold (what did I just say?

) becomes an instant expert as soon as money is involved.

The fact is that I wished to sell these chisels rather than have them sit around doing sweet Fanny Adams for the next six months.

Rob Streeper has decided to help out with Australia Post's bottom line and has confirmed he will take them. In fact he has already paid for them and advised that he will incorporate them into his programme of hardness testing of chisels, which in itself is a development of the hardness testing of vintage hand saws.. My apologies to Kuffy and Roy that you have missed out. There is a wild rumour floating around about some geezer who reputedly can stretch out fishes. If he passes by Millmerran I will ask him if his expertise extends to JP chisels.

I have the same set and am mostly pleased with them.

The 3 smallest ones in my set are pretty much useless as the lamination line is all over the place and there's soft steel in the cutting edge, yours appear to be a bit better. I also have a hairline fracture in the middle of the largest one, which makes it scrap metal.

The other 6 take a very fine edge and hold a workable edge for a long time and I use them with a regular hammer, not a mallet.

You have cleared up one aspect for me that I have since contacted Rob about. I had thought they were laminated (soft iron back to hard cutting edge), but wasn't 100% sure. I have already posted them off and alerted Rob to the fact they may have a soft back. As he will be subjecting them to his hardness testing I had this vision of him testing the back and asking the great wood working god what in hell had he got here. In addition, my ears would have dissolved off from high temperature.

I didn't notice the problems you have outlined, but I think you would have used yours more than I used mine. One chisel had a small chip at the cutting edge, testifying to their hardness perhaps, but I sharpened that out. I hope Rob will find them both interesting and useful. He has already debunked some myths over tools reputations so even allowing for this JP set being at the lower end of the market it will be an interesting East - West comparison.

Like H&S for example .Lol

How would these chisels handle the Oz hardwoods,be interesting to see Rob's take on the hardness comparison.

I used them on Forest Red Gum, Ironbark, Spotted Gum Casuarina Oaks and sundry other unknown brutal hardwoods. I did chip the edge of one chisel, but that might have been my heavy handedness. I don't think many chisels stand up well to that selection of timbers. However, as I mentioned before, neither did I put them to a lot of use.
