Default Stanley #46 Adjustable Dado and Plow Plane .... complete!

I have a Stanley #46 Adjustable Dado and Plow Plane for sale. This is a rare opportunity for someone as everything is there, and more.

Read Patrick Leach's Blood and Gore for full details: The Superior Works - Patrick's Blood & Gore: Planes #46 -
    #54

Patrick concludes: This plane is a fabulous worker, much better than the #45. The simple act of skewing the iron makes this plane plane dados around the #45. It also does a fine job of cutting cross grain rabbets, a common function when making lipped drawer fronts. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, and are given the chance to buy one, and you dig working wood with handtools, buy this tool! A good working example of this plane will cost less than the number of wooden dado planes alone that it replaces. And, unlike the wooden dado planes, this one won't warp on ya, which is the kiss of death for wooden dados (warped wooden dados will have your dados in a bind).

The #46 was originally nickel plated, which has worn off (trust me, if there was nickel, I'd be asking double!). The body is in excellent condition. No cracks, no dents or chips. The grey cast iron looks very nice.

The Rosewood handle and knob are both in perfect condition.

Every part is present, including the slitting blade, which is seen at the rear of the plane (this is used to slice thin boards. It is removed for all other work).

It comes with the original Rosewood sub-fence, as well as the second skate (which was not present on early models. This is needed for wide blades).

There are two sets of arms, one short and one long. Also included is a spare set of nickers.

The plane came with 11 blades (by 1919):

    ploughing and dadoing 3/16", 1/4", 13/16", 5/16", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 7/8", 1 1/4"
    fillister 1 1/2"
    tonguing 1/4"

I have 12 blades is all (a bonus of one):

Please note that an awful lot of time went into restoring these blades to better-than-new condition. They are hollow ground and honed at 30 degrees (the hollow makes it very easy to freehand them, if you do not have a guide). The skew is 20 degrees ...

And the backs of the blades have been surface ground and lapped, and polished to 3000 grit.

    Price: $450 excluding postage.

    Regards from Perth

If I sell those three I'll only be left with my other 405!!!

...and my 55, my Anant 45, my 050...

Joking aside I've been saying for months I need to have a cull; I'm keeping the better of my 405's as I also have a full set of matching H&R's and all the supplementary/optional extra blades to go with it...

I get back home on Friday so if no-one has committed by then I believe I may be taking lots of photographs.......

Any skew iron plane is a marvellous tool and the No. 46 must be king of the skews! I love mine.

This is an excellent deal because chasing down a good usable set of irons is an expensive and challenging chore.
