Stanley #5 1/2 plane
Here is a desirable Stanley #5 1/2 plane. This one was made in the USA, somewhere around 1930s. There is full japanning and really nice Rosewood wood.
Tight mouth - useful when using as a "super smoother" ...
The only flaw is that there was a broken horn on the handle. This was repaired sympathetically, and is actually quite hard to notice unless looking for it ...
The blade is rather special (and expensive!): a 1/8" thick hand-beaten high carbon steel blade by Clifton. This has not been manufactured for about 10 years. It takes a magic sharp edge!
Asking $200 (excluding postage).

So tempting. But I already have two 5 1/2's, surely I don't need one more?

Looks good Derek. What are those marks either side of the mouth if you don't mind me asking?

Hi Swifty
The lines were on the sole when I purchased this plane (around 15 or so years ago). It looks to me that someone may have incised (heavily marked) the mouth at some stage - perhaps to ensure that it was perfectly square to the sides. These marks are superficial - stand out more so in the photo.

Before emigrating, I had 3 Clifton planes with those blades. No other blade I have ever used has had quite the same feel on the sharpening stone. Difficult to describe, but an almost 'buttery' slick feeling. Superb feedback and easy to put a razor edge on. They take and hold a better edge, quicker, than almost anything else at a sane price point. If I didn't have all the bench planes I needed...
