Thread: Table saw - home made

Does it come with a blade guard of some sort? Otherwise in the hands of a novice that's a fairly deadly machine (ask me how I know!).

I don’t believe there is a guard - I’ll have a hunt around and see if I can locate one. If someone wants the saw they may have to fabricate one. If no interest I will pull apart and use the motor for another project.

IMHO the days for machines like that are long gone and it should be dismantled. Unguarded blade, unguarded belt and dodgy electrics. Nothing safe or legal about any part of this saw.

It looks like someone has put a lot of thought into that old saw. It looks well made. If you decide to pull it apart I would be interested in the mitre gauge as it looks to have a 1 inch guide bar. My old Tanner saw has 1 inch mitre slots.

How about “decommissioned” then and made safe by disconnection to be unusable before sale although this doesn’t look like a commercial manufactured machine worthy of preservation. My conscience wouldn’t let me sell a working unit in this condition but maybe I spent a bit of time investigating injury causes and prevention recommendations in a previous life.

I wouldn't class modern wooden home made machines in the same vein as vintage machinery, that although lacked a lot of the modern safety, were purpose built and could generally very easily be made safe to operate by most reasonable'ish standards.

However, IMHO a home made wooden rip saw is right at the very top of THE most dangerous tools to use.

Except maybe a home made chainsaw possibly.

Is somebody's for sale thread really the place to be having a discussion? The 'top-of-the-page' rules for buying and selling within the thread and not by pm are big and clear - perhaps there needs to be a bit added... along the lines of 'if you're not interested in buying the item, don't be blabbing here. Take the discussion elsewhere'.

This is just spoiling someone's honest attempt to sell an item. I realise the modern world tends to nanny state, and we must all contribute to the survival and continued procreation of the Dumb, but I think the for marketplace should be limited to buying and selling. Discussion within the thread should be between potential buyers and sellers.

Any saw is dangerous without a guard. Don't let the shiny new painted number fool you, it will cut just as deep and just as long as this old fella.
Easy enough to drill a hole through the riving knife and swing a guard off that. Be nice to see the knife a bit closer to the blade. Maybe it was originally made for a bigger blade. Belts seem pretty safe to me where they are. A cover would only fill with dust and start a fire. I personally would prefer to be able to see the belts than have them shrouded in mystery.
As for bagging a product put up for sale , beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If we feel the vendor is out of line maybe a PM would be the way to go.

If you don't want it don't buy, don't berate the the guy about if he should be selling it or not
