Default Ultra Deep Hollowing Rig - Brian McEvoy USA

Up for sale is this ultra deep hollowing rig designed my Brian McEvoy in the USA. This rig was made in Australia from plans purchased from McEvoy as they do not ship the fabricated unit to Australia because of the ridiculous shipping cost. The unit may not look too polished, however, as it was professionally made to the original purchased plans (even down to the height adjusters on the feet) it only differs from the factory made product by way of the missing fancy paint job. In use it is an incredible tool. The boring bar is solid 1 1/2" (40mm) steel close to 1800 long which gives it incredible mass and vibration resistance. It only needs finger control to bore up to 24" depth. I purchased it from a very experienced turner who had come to the end of their turning career and if i'm really honest with myself I'm not going to give it the use it deserves. The McEvoy deep hollower is now professionally sold in the USA by Carter products at around US$650 (close to $1000 Aussie before shipping etc). This is a specialised item rarely for sale that with some creativity allows the user to produce some incredible hollow forms. The first photo is stolen from the Carter website so you can get an idea of the unit in use. The remainder of the photos show the actual unit which includes the boring bar with carbide tip and lamp + boring bar gate on adjustable stand + boring bar tool rest. This unit also has the optional illumination kit to allow super thin wall hollowing via illumination through the vessel wall and spare carbide tips. I was hoping for $350. The unit can be picked up in Brisbane and I'm happy to ship it at the buyers expense, however, at 6' long the boring bar might present some challenges. I've attempted to post a few links below from the McEvoy and Carter websites which will provide more information.

This item needs to be sold so if there is any interest please make a sensible offer. I understand it’s a specialised piece of equipment, however, it’s a very well designed product made to a very high standard and would be priceless to the right person looking to put their hand to large hollow form work. PM me if there’s interest.

I'm assuming that the tape in the 2nd photo, the close up of the tip, is holding the wiring for the light? I assume it's low VDC and uses a xformer or battery?
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Yes to both. The tape is to hold the wiring and it all runs off a low voltage transformer which is included. There is a cable connector about half way along the boring bar which the low voltage transformer plugs into.
One option for interstate buyers is to consider cutting the boring bar in half. This may sound a little drastic but with a deft bit of threading it would be relatively easy to make it a 2 piece boring bar. The latest version from Carter is a 2 piece boring bar I believe. Just an option to consider.

OK Guys, I have had a little interest from people wanting to understand what the shipping costs may be to send the rig interstate so to make things clearer I'll post a few facts here to help in the decision process.

Total weight is around 40kg nett so I would allow an extra 10% for packaging - say 44kg.
The boring bar is 1900 long and the base of the gate assembly is around 860 square and 180 high so I would allow for a package of dimensions 200cm x 90cm x 20cm.

I did a little exploring on the e-go website to give you some idea of price. I can easily drop it at the depot at this end and I presume someone willing could arrange to collect it at the receiving end which should allow depot to depot freight. If we go the express freight option here's what I calculated:

    Brisbane to Sydney (Villawood) - 44kg carton, 200x90x20 = $55.07
Brisbane to Geraldton (dimensions as above) - $455
Brisbane to Perth (as above) - $143.19

I think the pricing could be further improved by selecting a freight option slower than express. With these facts and figures I'd encourage you to do your own homework on the freight but it looks surprisingly affordable to me to ship even as far as Perth.

Sing out if I can provide further info

    Hi Mate,
Thank you so much for that. Makes it way too expensive for me.
