Default Wenzloff & Sons Half-Back Saw

    Wenzloff & Sons Half-Back Saw

This is the first saw I purchased from Mike Wenzloff, in early 2008. Mike was at the forefront of custom handsaw renewal, and his saws have the reputation for being at the very top of the ladder. All those sawyers who followed, who are making saws today, owe this field to Mike and his sons. Sadly, they are not around anymore.

I am embarrassed to note that this half-back saw has been used a half dozen times over the 13 years I have had it. It is like a new saw still. Why is this so? Simply because I do not do much crosscut sawing at the bench, for which this style of sawing was designed ... the shorter blade (verses a full panel saw) is more controllable and manoeuvrable.

    Taken in 2008 ...

    Construction details:
    No. 8 Half-Back Saw
    18" blade length
    .030" steel
12 ppi fleam/rake angle to suit Australian timbers (Mike was a good mate of mine and he knew what I worked)
    Cross Cut
    Slotted Brass Back
    Tasmanian Blackwood handle

It pains me to sell this saw, but I am downsizing, use this one too little, and still have a bunch of other Wenzloff saws, which I shall take to my grave!

On to some photos ... Gawd, this is a gorgeous saw!

The lamb's tongue is sublime ...

Onto the price ... A recent eBay sale in the USA sold one of these (and not nearly as nice) for over $600 USD. My price for this saw is $425 (AUD). Postage is not included (but probably around $20 around Oz). You would likely pay more than this for a new saw ... if one was still available.

    Regards from Perth
