Wood Lathe - Vicmark VL175 digital variable speed
Selling my Vicmark VL175 variable speed lathe. I’m an amateur turner only making pens and would like a smaller lathe. This is a fantastic lathe, had it for 8 years and comes with original stand, outrigger turning rest, 2 chucks, spanner, knock out bar and other accessories. It has reverse and also an emergency immediate stop. I have been told by experienced turners that it is a turners dream to own one of these. Selling the lot for $2,800.

I'm pretty interested in your lathe but have you got some photos I can see first before I commit.
Thanks Peter

Based off the facebook advert it looks like Susan has someone organised to see/buy the lathe this weekend and then several people including all of us and others on FB lined up behind in case that falls through. Oh well - looks like a new Vicmarc is going to be the likely outcome for me!
Incidentally, I wonder how much the speed control etc has changed in the last 15 years. I know they've upgraded a few times in that period. Not sure if it would be something that would be noticeably better vs the older lathes like this one.
Cheers, Dom

Worth the money...not surprised if they have a line up for buying it.
I have exactly the same lathe with the same speed control and it does everything I need it to do.
I bought mine 2nd hand in 2008 and it hasn't missed a beat.

Just have to remain patient and keep looking. More will come up and with the economy in crisis I suspect there will be deals down the track.
Did you see the new, but prototype VL200 swivel head lathe Marco from Vicmarc advertised recently? It was the prototype for the VL240 swivel head. Long bed with stand etc. It was $3500- which seemed a good deal - just bad timing for me.
Cheers, Dom

Dom, I think you will find that lathe was a short bed unit with a bed extension bolted on.
https://www.google.com/search?q=prot...IDTQhrB_p8CnM:
For whatever reason, some lathe manufacturers have discontinued long bed lathes, but generally have an option of a bed extension for those who need a longer bed for long spindle work. If I was manufacturing lathes, I'm reasonably certain that is the way I would go. Best cost alternative for the purchaser and manufacturer; in that the purchaser can order either a short bed extension of a long bed extension and the manufacturer can sell their standard lathe to someone who has very limited space and also sell the same lathe with an extension to those who have the need and space for a longer lathe.
In the case of Vicmarc lathes, with some models, there are two possibilities, a short bed extension and a longer bed extension.
