    Default Lie-Nielsen 40 1/2 Scrub Plane

    Lie-Nielsen 40 1/2 Scrub Plane.
    As new condition. Hardly used.
    $250 incl postage in Australia
    From Lie-Nielsen site:
A Scrub Plane removes large quantities of wood in a hurry. In the past, Scrub Planes were used like a Thickness Planer to take rough-sawn boards down to size, before finishing with a Jack Plane and a Smooth Plane.

Today’s woodworker will still find pleasure in using a Scrub Plane for this purpose, and will also find it practical for shaping irregular objects, producing an interesting finished surface or for jobs like backing out a length of molding to fit an irregular wall.

Our Scrub Plane has a cast Iron body, 10¼" (26.03cm) long. The blade is massive to eliminate chatter — 1½" (3.81cm) x 3/16" (4.76mm) thick. A 3" (7.62cm) radius on the blade and an open throat allow taking a deep cut with ease. Based on the Stanley 40½ (11.43cm) .

I might be jumping the gun but for me the marketplace should display the amount asked for and "ill take it". Negotiating further complicates things. The seller is able to reduce the asking price if he or she would like to if the initial asking price is not met.
    Cheers Tony

Haggling is always a perfectly acceptable norm for anything being sold online, the only exception probably being when the seller states the price as "firm"!

In fact I think it may even be Australian law that haggling must occur for any transaction? ;-)

"Tell him he's dreaming" of course being the standard way to decline a transaction!

In this instance, HairyPresident has it straight to the poolroom.

These are lovely lovely planes. They are the Carbide-Insert-Helical-Head-Thicknessers of the handplane world.
    HairyPresident will love it

Scrub planes are much unappreciated, and once you've used one you will reach for it more and more.
It can quickly true up twists in boards to make thicknessing more straight forward
Mine is an old Sargent and it gets more use than you might imagine - I've even used it on occasion to hog off large chunks from edges before resorting to jacks and jointers.
    Enjoy

Tom is the Sargent the same width as a 40 or wider like the 40 1/2 ?
I had a mate in Albury who had a comprehensive collection of Sargent planes.

Just checked - mine is the 161 which is the same width as the 40-1/2. Both have a 1-1/2 inch blade
The Sargent 160 is also a little narrower than the Stanley 40 - 1 inch blade as against the 1-1/4" blade of the Stanley 40
