Thread: African Walnut and coach

OK, here are FOUR decent beams of OLD African timbers.

I actually don't know exactly what they are... as they were acquired from a turner with whom I swapped some giant sections of absolutely premium black walnut (nigra something). He acquired them from his father (from his shed after he passed) who had acquired them years previously from an importer of African Timbers to Oz.

The SIDES of the timbers are chalked with WALNUT and COACH.

I don't know if this is true, but it is absolutely consistent with what I've seen other timber places do. The turner bloke I acquired them from advised that these chalkings have always been there and not added by himself or his dad...so.... be sceptical as my claims of what they might possibly be.

It has been in my studio (50% humidity 19 deg winter, 21 summer) for 5 years.

Each piece is
#1 160 x 80 x 1850 African walnut
#2 165 x 80 x 1880 African walnut
#3 155 x 55 x 1320 African walnut
#4 210 x 45 x 1320 African? coach

The Coach timber (4) is by far the most visually interesting of the lot. The others did not give me any itches, rashes, snots, sneezes or reactions while doing the sanding, so at least they are not Death Toxic Nasties.

I've sanded the end of the bits with 80 and 120. It was then given a clean using isopropyl. No trick photography, this is just under the LED lights of my studio.

On sanding, they are heavy timbers, but surprisingly the 80 and 120 grit made short work of it. They sanded very nicely and without huge effort. If I were to hazard a guess as to the hardness, it would be close to our common Vic Ashes. The thumbnail test advised me A bit heavier though. I can weigh them if needed.

Note: the artefacts on the end grain shot of pieces 1 and 2 are part of the timber, not machining marks. All end grain shots were sanded as smooth as I could make them without being stupid about it.
