Default Bowling Alley - Rock Maple

When we bought our house a few years ago I found a number of lengths of very heavy timber stored underneath. It took a while to connect the dots but it turns out to be sections of a bowling alley - most likely from the Top Ryde alley that was demolished prior to building the new shopping centre there. I've used some of this to make a cubby house floor and a couple of benches but there is much more than I can really use so I've decided its time to find out if someone else can use it.

There are two types of timber in the sections I have. One is Rock Maple and is very nice timber. The other is something else and is less interesting. The two sections pictured below are both Maple and have triangle inlays and it's these I'm listing for sale here. They have some surface damage as pictured.

The two sections pictured below measure around 2400 x 530 x 65. They are very heavy.

I'm not sure how to price these as the only similar timber I can find for sale is in the US. Based on that and a rough guess as to worth I'll set a price of $250 per section. I'm open to offers and discussion of course. Pick up only please in Telopea, Sydney.

If you're not familiar with bowling alley construction it involves lots of nails driven sideways through the timber strips. Consequently crosscutting is best done with an old saw blade as you will almost certainly hit a nail on the way through. Separating the timber strips is possible but you end up with many nail holes - I'd say don't plan on buying this to break up into strips.

If I haven't put you off please get in touch. If you really like the idea of this and want to look at the other pieces let me know. I have two longer sections of the other timber.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Been there. Not fun! Probably as much steel as wood - weight for weight. I might be exaggerating a little but it certainly seems that way. And the bolts!

Best used as a bar or table top.

Irwin used to sell a ‘Nail eater’ 9 1/4” circ saw blade.
Cut a bit of this stuff up with one of those years ago.
Not a lot of teeth and when you hit the nails the carbide didn’t explode just chipped a bit.
If making a bench from this stuff it needs to be fully framed underneath.
We hung a bit off a bench and the overhang piece was rs after a short while due to the nails letting go.
    Rock Maple is great stuff.
