    Default WANTED: Huon Pine

I need some decent soul who is willing to help me get a few small pieces of Huon Pine. Maybe there's someone out there who I gave a good deal on something or helped in some way who can do me a solid on this? Either way, I hope you will read what follows.

I will need four pieces, and I'll need them to be milled to a rough size so that they can be shipped internationally (more on that later).

I'm also not willing to pay some ridiculous "craft sizes" price for it. I know what HP is worth. I'll consider prices around $7500 or $8000 per cubic meter, plus a bit for your time dressing the wood, which is more than fair to anyone.

So if anyone is interested in that, I need the following sized pieces, all in either 25mm dressed thickness or 30mm rough sawn thickness:

    1@ 200 x 200

    3@ 125 x 300

They need to be clear, dry, and without significant fault.

NOTE: These are estimates and may be a bit smaller or larger, up to a few mm either direction. I'll get the exact sizes needed before we transact, and I'll compensate you appropriately.

At a rate of $7500 per cubic meter that's around $30-35. I'd be willing to pay $50-55 given that it involves a bit of milling, and possibly a bit more if you're willing to take the time to post it. If you don't think that's fair, please let me know, and I am happy to talk about it.

I will, of course, pay the postage in full.

Regarding postage and payment, I have an Australian bank account and can pay in advance with a simple bank transfer. Sending something internationally requires filling out a simple form in addition to the usual Auspost process at the PO.

If you're willing to sell the wood, but the shipping part gives you cold feet, I have some friends in Aus who would be willing to ship it to the States for me, so please don't let that deter you from responding to the post.

PM is probably the best method of contact.

    Thanks a lot,
    Luke

I assume you are referring to plain Huon, not figured stuff? The reason I ask is that at Maleny last year a rough sawn natural edge burl piece ~200x200x30 were flying off the shelf for ~$50.

Yeh, but pen makers look at these little slabs for "how many pen blanks can I get out of it". That size gives you at least 10 blanks, so $5 each, cheap for highly figured blanks

Yes, straight grained wood. It's for a piece of furniture.

I don't doubt that they sell it for those kind of prices, especially at a wood show where people are in "this only happens once a year" mode. That's a seller's market. For stuff that's only available in "craft" sized pieces, it's not uncommon to see those kinds of prices. I was quite happy to pay $50k per cube for Gidgee. It's not a particularly easy one to track down, mill, dry, and break down into sellable pieces. I feel the same way about the other outback/drylands species, and I feel the same way about burls, etc. which come in very small quantities.

Huon Pine, on the other hand, and other furniture sized trees, should not cost that much when sold as straight grained timber. I think $7500-8000 per cube is still a fairly high price, but I'm willing to pay it since it is a pretty rare one nowadays, and because I'm ultimately asking end users to dip into their personal stash and do me a favor.

The only plain stuff I have is a 100x50 plank so not much help. Hope one of our Tassie supplies answers. You could also try the "Australian Wood Sellers Group" on Facebook

Morrison's sawmill on the waterfront in Strahan Tas would be able to meet your requirements.

I was there just last week purchasing some Celery Top, King Billy etc for flute making. The price was quite reasonable and they will post out for you.

For those who have not yet seen The Wall in the wilderness located at Derwent Bridge TAS,it is more than worth the entry cost,as you will spend hours marvelling at Greg Duncan's wooden sculptures!

    Cheers CR.

I have two pieces I've just found when looking for something else; had them for a while.

    Both are able to give you 200mm x 225mm x 50mm thick.

Not entirely what you want, but it could be a start.

The one with the rule on it is waxed on the ends, the other one you see whole isn't. That crack isn't deep, possibly a mm or two at the most.

Iwas at the Maleny wood show and we had a lot of huon pine for sale in all different sizes . the size you have mentioned we would sell for $12.I do not know who had huon up there for this price .we sell huon pine pen blanks 150x25x25 for $1.50 each .I am going to Tasmania on the 11/11 to purchase 3 ton of huon pine along with other Tasmanian timbers. This will all be available from Brisbane early December at prices cheaper than Tasmanian prices. We source and cut our own timber in Tassy and can sell it at affordable prices.huon should not be more than $5000 cm dressed with no faults .ring me and I will answer any queries on this .
