Thread: Kumiko slats - EOI - supply - 4mm x 50/60mm

I’m interested; I’ve recently purchased a pair of Kumiko jigs from Wigwood and was looking at having to rip up some DAR to get the raw materials to practice with. I’m hoping I can get some of the local Guilds and Mens Sheds members interested in this aspect of woodworking.

Slightly off topic, are there any pattern books you would recommend?

Rather than just "me" or "I'm in", let me potentially give you some useful data.

I would be keen on packs of 100, and in order of preference for timber species from those listed, would take Basswood, Beech, Tasmanian Oak, Obeche, Western Red Cedar. Also open to other timbers, potentially even dark coloured timber (e.g. Jarrah etc).

If things work out, this would be something I would be keen on obtaining more than once - i.e. there would be the potential of repeat needs in time to come.

Given the lengths you nominate, transport could be challenging, but I would actually be prepared to travel to Canberra (assuming you're dealing with someone local?) to pick up (and would order a couple packs to make that trip worthwhile) should courier or other transport not be possible or be prohibitively expensive.

I know very little - am just starting in my Kumiko journey, but Des King I believe has a series of books covering many patterns, and I often hear them spoken of with high regard. Take a look here: D & M King | Shoji | Publications ::

Midnight Man is 100% correct on Des Kings books - all four are deeply comprehensive.


Postage - well, its early days, but as anyone who bought timbers off me in the 2019 great Timber Purge would know, I get astounding rates from my couriers.

Size is simply not a consideration - end location is.

For delivery, they will be packaged in the same way as commercial timber Venetian blinds would be at Bunnings/Spotlight. They will be packed into a standard plastic box (recyclable), just like a blind.


At the moment though, just looking for EOI's......

I can think of other applications for material such as this other than Kumiko.

However I have no immediate need right now.

In the past I have done this sort of backwards - recycling old timber blind slats into other items.

I don't think I would use a great quantity in my lifetime but I would mostly want pieces up to 1 metre in length and various timbers.

Count me in, I want to do some Kumiko of an evening but being away from machines has made it rough.

I am very interested in this new source of wood. Keen to participate and would especially be interested in a picking up option.

Mix of woods, big pack, any and all lengths to 2400mm.
Like the Chief, I have the Wigwood jigs.
I have the Des King books - an excellent reference and guide.
Looking for a good set of Japanese saws and a kanna.

edit - on reflection, probably unlikely to need more than 1000mm lengths, as the framing will be something else....

I tried buying the lot, but its all too hard. The guy simply can't be engaged to do a bulk deal.... so small numbers it is for the moment.

When buying, put in the NOTES/COMMENTS FIELD that it is for the 100 metre bundle.

I have to admit, just as a thing, is how hard it is to do a simple deal in Australia. Emailing and using chat with China and Vietnam is a pleasure. It's a matter of explanation, a bit of specification, postage calculation and ordering. They follow up. They come back. They don't attempt to gouge the hell out of you. It's simple.

Not so with Aussie businesses. It is, at every stage, the opposite. At every stage they have done their utmost to stifle, kill and control the transaction.

It has worn me out.

The eBay vendor is the only local one I've had any success with.... even then he tried to take advantage of me by padding the postage and jaming GST on to an eBay sale.....
