Default Potential Qld - anyone interested in milling, and divvying up, some ash and olive?

    Hi all,

I am not sure if this strictly qualifies as a marketplace post but I thought I should err on the side of assuming it was.

I recently had some work done by an arborist in my back yard. When they went to mulch a nice big chunk of the olive tree trunk I banshee-screamed. This led to me sharing I'd be keen for any logs of hard-to-get timber, particularly any olive wood.

He soon after deposited some fairly meaty chunks of olive wood (in the back of the photo), and three big chunks of what the guys said was "ash" and which I think is silver ash (but I can of course confirm this afternoon if any interest). I was not expecting such big pieces. Fortunately there are two paths at my house and my kid is finding it fun to "parkour"

I was thinking of having a caveman session and cross-cutting in half then splitting into some staves for turning - nice big pieces should be available. But the pieces are big enough they seem to be worth milling as an alternative. However I do not have a bandsaw and they are far too heavy to lift without equipment to transport.

So my question is - is anyone with the equipment to do a small milling operation interested in doing so (Brisbane inner south) and taking half? I have bought silver ash once and it was very $$$.

(This would also spare my poor, officeworker, noodle arms!)

    Chris

I bandsawed a heap of brushbottle logs and swore to myself I would never do it again.
They were large and heavy but I did it without giving the machine any stress.
The reason I wouldn't ever do it is because I didn't get many boards out of them. There was a lot of wastage.
If I were you I would simply just use them for turning.

PM Dai Sensei (Neil Wright) ; he is located in Nerang and has a portable mill. Importantly, he knows how to “see” the grain inside the timber and how to get the best figure for either planks or blanks.

thanks mate, but not doing to much milling these days with the mill, I have trouble starting the big beast . Mind you those logs look more like a decent bandsaw job.

I could perhaps help you out but stuff that size I normally attack with a chainsaw and/or bandsaw. I already have heaps of timber - 11.5t of timber, in 267 species (current count), stored in and around house on a small block in the suburbs. This includes a lot of Olive burl from an enormous root ball. I actually live in a camper and the house is used as storage, yeh a bit obsessive. If you interested in species, welcome to call in, but also look into joining the International Wood Collectors Society (IWCS) as we have a lot of members in Qld and meet regularly. Welcome to call and discuss on 0417 782 204

Just noting I've resolved on just splitting most of this but thanks to those who replied (and consider thread closed)
