Wood price seems very reasonable to me. But like others, I lament the cost that such a heavy wood would incure for delivery to Vic.

(On a side issue: Hey, I notice the wood colour on cut end is brown. Is that the natural colour of this sawn wood? How long does it take to turn greyish-black on exposure to light?)

About 10 years ago at the Sydney show. I had an opportunity to buy a cube of Solomon Queen Ebony for $750. I couldn’t buy it because it was impossible to arrange transportation 30 minutes before the show was closed.

Guess who has been kicking himself for the past 10 years?

Hi Euge, that piece is one half of a length that I cut in two. I was surprised when I cut that length to see the colour in the end grain on the cut because the other end of both pieces is darker. I couldn’t tell you if it will stay like that or change over time as it oxidises.

Euge, that timber would be from the same supplier I got the piece of Queen Ebony I gave to you.

Wongo, that $750 for a cube seems ridiculously low (amazing value)... missing a "0" for a unique wood and probably soon to be protected.

Woodchopper, maybe (perhaps in the Timber forum where wood colour change is discussed) you could make comment on how long it takes the end grain of this wood to darken ... if you still have some to test it).

It is not a joke. The pack of Ebony was right in front of me. The guy who had a store at the show did not want to carry it all the way back to Far North Queensland.

I believe that similar offers were made at the Brisbane show one year around that time, but unfortunately I was not there at the end as I lived in Bundaberg at the time, about four hours north and had already started home. Still, I went home with a fair bit of nice timber at what I considered good value.

Wongo, I did not doubt you at all. I've heard of other similar offers at the Melb Wood Shows when I used to attend them with Tas and Qld woods offered at VERY low prices so that they did not have to take them home. My comments was about the VERY low price they would accept for such wood.
