Just wondering if this has come to a conclusion yet.

I read in the thread that you will be doing some sorting and will provide more details after next Wednesday 1 December 2021. These forums are a great place to sell small quantities of timber and tools but I've never seen a large and expensive lot of timber sell here. We are, mostly, amateurs and many have limited financial means. When I say expensive I'm not saying too expensive by-the-way, I think you have priced the stack well.

As others have said, if you have the time and the energy you will be able to share your father's love of fine timber to many people. My sole useful contribution to this is to suggest that if you do not have the time and energy to do all that work you could consider going to one of the auction houses, or to one of the groups that holds annual auctions of timber (there is one in mid-coast NSW from memory). They would have the expertise to know how best to sell and in what quantities. Of course, they would also take their commission, but you might well end up the same financially because they should be able to get the best prices. I've never bought from one of those auctions, and have no connection with them, but I do know keen amateur craftspeople who do so regularly so the end market will likely be the same.

Also, I do not know if he is still operating, but a forums member who lives in Burpengary is a very experienced trader in timber (I have bought from him). I know that he has helped other people out in the past. If you PM me I'll give you his details (best not to do so in the open forums for privacy reasons) - though I'll check whether he is still operating first so as not to waste your time.

I am oversupplied with timber myself and out of storage so I will be unable to help out by purchasing any.

Might I first echo what everyone has said about thoughts about your late father.

I thought I might jump in on what you mentioned about the other stuff. I am a bit of a handtool enthusiast and scan ebay and Facebook market place a lot as well as spend more than I care to admit on newer stuff.

* Antique planes are not necessarily gold mines but depending on what they are, and their condition, they will most likely go quickly either as individual item here or as a job lot. I myself would be there with my bib on!

Please however don't let them go in a job lot without having someone who knows their stuff check them out!

* Same with sharpening stones. I would be interested in a job lot. So would others. A lot of sharpening has been taken over with diamond plates, but there is an enthusiast market.

* A suitcase fitted out as a custom chisel box, if it came with a complete set of Marples chisels... well frankly that is a gold mine. I would be torn between bidding but also being aghast at taking off anyone's hands. I just wanted to dive in and say it's probably economically very valuable.

In addition I have still have the following things from Dad that someone would be interested in.

20 boxes of Dad Library, 15 of mostly really beautiful books on everything from fine woodworking, furniture design, turning
A big box of antique planes that Dad spent years collecting
3 small 15l boxes of every conceivable kind of sharpening stone ever including really white Arkansas (not sure if that is the right word) stones
A suitcase (old box kind) that Dad fitted out himself to house the best of his Marple's chisels (which will kill me to let go of)

I humbly ask, if everyone could be patient until next weekend. I will then have the time and space to spread it all out and photograph each piece or even groups. (Maybe same types of timber? My species identification can be a bit hit and miss). I can upload all the photos 1 December.

My next question is how do I price it all pieced out. Is there some magic formula that makes it easy? Or do I just ask for offers from you all? I want to be as fair and reasonable as possible. I would gladly take any suggestion from you all on this.

Re the tools you could give Hans Brunner a ring and see if he would be interested in selling them off for you.
He is currently selling off an extensive axe collection.
He’s been selling tools for 30 years or so.
Straight shooter and honest.
Just google. Hans Brunner tool sales.

Its a pity there’s never been an annual tool sale organised for Brisbane.
Sydney,Melbourne,Adelaide and Perth all have one.
Guess the lack of a tool collectors club comes into it although I found it commercially worthwhile from’86 to 2013 or thereabouts here in Sinny.

Hello Henry, this is for everyone's benifit, I've been to Julianne's place to view the timber, the only tools she has left are old timber moulding planes, maybe close to a dozen in various conditions, nothing Hans Brunner would be interested in. There is some nice timber there which I've already expressed interest in. (only a small amount)

That was quick.
I did wonder where all this was going.
Quick is good we had widows come to tool sales with grossly overpriced stuff and come back the next year, ditto.

What I thought I could do by myself in a week has taken me and the generous help of another forum member almost two months to achieve. But hooray we got there.

The stack is now divided into three piles and is easy to "dig through".

I have had great problems identifying some of the timbers. The dates written on the timbers are mid to late 70's. Some of the species are written on the timber and some has greyed on the surface with time and is hard to identify. I tried to sand off the surfaces on some pieces to see if it would help but I only bought a cheap sander from Bunnings that doesn't really work very well. What I can work out that most of the pieces (probably at least 60%) are cedar. The rest being a mixture of mahogany, oaks, beech, and others. Some pieces are beautiful, solid, heavy timber but I can only guess what they are. If you come to look feel free to bring a plane to help with identifying the more mysterious pieces

However, as some of you suspected the long delay has left me short on sale time and in a rather desperate situation. So in order to sell quickly I am greatly reducing the prices. I am happy to look an any offers at the moment because I need to sell in the next few weeks. I am also happy to do a deal on bundles of timber.

Here is my rough guide for what I would like to get
* $50 - $100 for the pieces of timber in picture 2 and 3. I figure if I can lift the wood and its about my height then more the $50 side. If its way longer than me and I am struggling to pick it up then closer to $100. Its not very precise guideline but I am open to all offers on this timber
* In picture 1 there are two long pieces of cedar 150mm square. I would like to sell them as a pair and I would definitely like more than $100 a piece for those two.
* The other exception is the two largest slabs of cedar at the top of picture 1 and discussed previously. These are the two most incredible pieces of cedar and they deserve to be made into a masterpiece. All the other timber is negotiable price wise but I would not be willing to sell them for anything less than $5000 for the pair.

I am home everyday for the next week and am available to show the timber anytime after 10am. I am at Bald Hills on the northside. Just message and I can send my details.
