    Default 2hp 3 phase motor

I’m looking for a 3 phase motor with the following specs:

    - 2hp or there about.
    - 4 pole (1400 rpm).
    - It needs to be able to be wired for delta @240v.

It also needs to be in very good working condition, and will be used with a VFD.

I’m happy to consider an interstate purchase if you can securely package it and arrange a shipping quote to 7054, or a local depot around Hobart.

Alternately, if anyone can suggest where to look for used motors, I’m all ears. I’ve tried the local motor repairer, but they said they never see working units being replaced with single phase ones.

Lance, I would try an electric motor repairer, 3 phase swaps for single phase are not uncommon. The last one I did I left the motor with the three phase repairer rather than try and get rid of it.

That's where I went. They said they never get working small motors like that going spare. They have on several occasions provided meters and meters of copper wire to me for another hobby at no cost, so they're not just trying to fob off a non commercial customer. They are lovely people to deal with. If I can't find a used motor I will buy from them to support their general business ethic.

The price of used 3P motors seems to have jumped significantly and their availability almost dried up in the last few years.

10 years or so ago when VFDs were relatively rare I was picking up decent used 3P motors for ~$30 and quality motors for $70 or less. I remember picking up a 4kW motor in excellent condition for $35 - didn't even have to haggle the seller down in price on this one.

I purchased several dozen over the years and only had one dud - a bedraggled looking 3kW Toshiba (usually a good motor) that I didn't time to run my meters over. When I bought it how the insulation resistance was just OK - I ended up overloading it and letting the smoke out.

I also found several beauties like the 1.5HP Leeson motor I put on my DP, and a never used 3HP Leyroy Somer with a fan that spins at 2x the RPM of the motor for $70 that I installed on my WW BS.

Theres a 1440 rpm 2HP Brook Hanse motor on Perth Gumtree but they want $130 for it - good motor and if it checked out would probably still be value for $.

I have now mostly used all my motors up or unsold them. I still have a never used 3HP 1440rpm Leyroy Somer that I swapped for an old 3HP single phase Chinese motor, and a quality 2HP 1440 RPM motor from an Evap AC unit that I got for $35, but I want to hang onto those for now.

It depends on the application but if you can't find a good used one locally I would recommend a budget level new one. At least you get a warranty and some peace of mind.
