9mm mortise chisel wanted
I have a small project coming up that specifies 9mm mortises; does anyone have a 9mm mortise chisel they’d like to offload?
It’s an uncommon size I know but I’m trying to avoid buying an oversized one and grinding it down to fit; and I can’t change the mortise size to suit a 3/8” or 10mm.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Maybe you can't go up in size, but you could go down. The difference in strength between 8mm (or 5/16") would be marginal.
I doubt a 9mm or 23/64" chisel (of any kind) was ever made, on purpose anyway.

Thanks Mark, but it has to be 9mm exactly. Can’t go bigger, can’t go smaller .
I’ve found references to Japanese chisels in this size, plus Henry Eckert lists one but doesn’t seem to want to provide any details beyond it featuring on a list.
The most hopeful is a Kirschen available from Ideal Tools, but they don’t supply a picture and the Kirschen part number they quote is no longer current. Still, if I get no bites here I’ll give them a call.
Thanks for responding anyway.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

I might be just a Klutz but my mortises are rarely EXACTLY the width of the chisel used to cut them. If I ever had a requirement for an exactly 9mm mortise I think I might be starting with an 8mm chisel anyway, possibly 7mm.

Shame Stu ( tools from Japan ) is not operating anymore, he was definitely able to source specific sizes like this.
Perhaps if you don't have luck elsewhere try Stan Covington for a good quality Japanese chisel.

I thought they would have them Chris.
I was at a sharpening class there a while back and got looking at their hollow mortise bits and they were all sorts of weird sizes like 9mm.
