Thread: Fencers auger bits.

Thanks for looking through your collection Huon, I thought this would be a fairly easily filled request, but no, the bits must be a lot scarcer than I thought. I've got about 7 -8 Fencers bits but only one is 1/2" diameter. Chief Tiff also thought he had one but on checking his stash found it non-compliant as well.

I've got one that is more like 9/16 with a different twist and cutting spurs. I'll get a picture later if it is of interest.

I have a few augers (3 off) here that size except I cut the square end off one to use in an electric drill and the other two long ones have rings at the end and not square ends. maybe a good welder could remove a ring and reattach a square end. Let me know if you want a photo.

Col, I'm going to cut the tang off them too, the critical dimensions are 1/2" dia' and 9 1/2" (230mm) of twist, I've got a couple of ring style but they don't have long enough twist.

I'm remodelling the design and unfortunately the augers I used originally will now be too short.

Fuzzie, that bit's a ripper but unfortunately it doesn't comply in this case but thanks for your interest.

Derek, I'd like to take you up on your offer, this weekend is out due to Australia day tomorrow and Monday visiting MIL and cleaning the leaves from her roof and gutters. I'll send you a PM.

I have just turned the shed upside down. Never knew I had so many auger bits but... There is always a but. All the twists on the augers I have are much shorter than the length you want even though many are longer in total length. Why is the twist length critical? Is it just for looks to match existing that you are chasing. From the picture of your machine twist length would not seem to matter.

Col, I should start a new thread in the Hand Tools Forum and I will eventually up date the thread in the Metalwork Forum, in the meantime: The new version of the boring machine is contained in a frame which is on wheels to be wheeled from post to post in the paddock. in his patent the inventor says that the bits must be fully retracted before moving on to the next post to avoid damaging them. The problem with the existing bits is that by the time they protrude through the 50mm frame they are not going to be capable of boring through a fairly thick post. I considered cut down eye (ring) augers but then, if boring a thick post, the problem could arise that the twist not being long enough to expel the swarf the bits could end up getting bogged in the post.
Simple remedy, use fencers bits with their longer twist, except they're scarcer than I had anticipated. We'll get there, thanks to all for your help so far. Going to visit Derek next week.

Thanks to all that responded to this request, I have now managed to accumulate a set of six 9/16" fencers bits. I would have preferred 1/2" for authenticity but the 9/16 will do just fine.
