File & Rasp hardwood handle blanks
Hi all,
I have a number of files and rasps picked up without handles many years ago. finally want to make some timber handles and with a little brass coll et insert just for comfort, aesthetics.
Does anyone have any hardwood blanks perhaps equivalent to knife blanks in size around Qty 20 of 40mm x 40mm x 100mm approximately that i can use to carve down.
Literally no preference of types of age of timber, dont have much stock at the moment so buying what i need at this stage and trying to avoid bunnings timber materials for this
Also anyone know a good cheap source of brass tubing, just bunnings?
Cheers,
Nathan

Nathan,
Assuming you're going to turn them, could you not find a piece of firewood or two to split for handles?

Hey LanceC,
That is a fair assumption but not correct in this case. Rasping and shaping ,spokeshaves myself, . Im ok for this to be a work in progress and each of them to be a little different.
Primarily setup for hand tooling since selling my lathe and all other machinery years ago so im really enjoying the pace and satisfaction at the moment.
Your also correct. I do have an order of firewood coming which is crazy because its sad looking at some of the pieces as im throwing them in I plan on making two mallets out of some random firewood, just dont have any here yet.
Cheers
Nathan

Hi Nathan,
Well I read that you're after 40x40x100mm blanks, so that's what I can make for you. Or any other size you think you might like to start off with. Just let me know. I can work out a mates rates cost per piece.
The larger, the heavier and more expensive it is to post. Just something to consider as well.
Cheers!

Perfect. Yeah thats what im after dont want to push up postage. Is there a standard box size that could be filled to make ot easy for you? I'd go for 20 of them but if there was a standard size box or something that could be filled with more or variety of other similar dimensions I could use it so happy to see what you think.

Sounds like a plan to me mate. Just let me know the rough square size of wood you'd like for the plane parts and I can prep those for you as well.
These handles will make for a good little show and tell here on the forum!

great! well lets say qty x 5 blocks at 50mm thick and 150mm deep and 150mm tall will cover the handle and tote for 5 planes, then the handles for rasps and files
Yeah thats the goal, will do one and refine and make a post for sure.

And I am still extremely grateful. Bandsaw, router, linisher, gifkins jig plus other bits and pieces are going well and are muched loved and used. Lathe pulley wheel cracked and needed major surgery and after consultation with some surgeons it has now moved to a new (retirement) home.
