Thread: Hammond TrimOsaw or similar printer's saw

A Douglas was found at a country printers closing down and rescued before being sold off for scrap. If anyone has either the screws for the blades or other spares, happy to chat.

I have just purchased a Douglas a mate picked it up and it is yet to arrive at my place he is away for at least a week, there are a few spares so when it arrives I will see if I can assist.

Hi China - what I'm really after is the thread pitch, height and diameter, core diameter, angle of the countersink and length of the three screws that hold the blade onto the cutter head.

The ones that came with the saw weren't even vaguely close - what was holding on the blade was a lightly peined end to the cutter head, probably locktite and a lot of luck and hope. And completely stripped out hex heads on the screws they'd used.

Any help with that information will be most gratefully appreciated!

So after a couple of false leads, the 6" blade (or your replacement equivalent) is attached to Douglas saw cutter head by 1/4" BSF countersink screws.

To prevent the screws from protruding out the back of the cutter head which would interfere with the trimmer setting ring behind it, I'll be using 5/8" length screws. 3/4" is just a bit too long.

The only place I could find with the BSF sizes I needed in stock was Classic Fasteners in Adelaide. Thank you.

Bore size should be 22.4mm - this allows for slight misalignment of the three holes that will need to be cut in any blade you're planning on using on the saw. You'll also need to make sure the countersink that is cut on each of those holes will allow the flat head of the screw to sit flush or better yet, about 0.2mm below the outside face of the blade plate.

With my saw, using the original spindle, the maximum blade diameter I can get away with is 160mm - any bigger and I would not be able to get the teeth below the top of the sliding table.

So the blade that came with the machine is off to Henry Bros. Saws in Vineyard with a sample screw - and within a week or two, I'll have a new 48 triple teeth blade on the machine and cutting away. And the old Daiko blade sharpened and ready for cutting brass.

I always wonder about the amount of lead I consumed when using one of these saws in my apprenticeship. I could add the Mercury I also used extensively with no regard to skin contact in my next job after that. The things we did in ignorance are many.
