Default Hand Tools - wanted - help me downshift

    Hi all,

I'm moving into working from home in a tiny space. No machinery!

So, to do this I need some new tools. I'm a very happy buyer of second hand (I'm... "economically challenged")

IF you have any of the following that are spare, unneeded, selling down, or just feeling pity on this old dog.... please do think about it...

    Veritas Router plane
    Veritas 3 saw dovetail kit
    Veritas plow plane small
    Veritas #6 Fore Plane
Veritas LA Jack plus 3 blades - camber one as a jack, 50 degree bevel for smoothing, 25 degree bevel for shooting and planing end grain + toothed blades.
    Spokeshave - flat and concave

The list is simply a compilation of the conversations from this thread: Downsizing and moving to hand tools..... Wisdom needed!!!

I've chosen Veritas for the very simple reason that I have the low angle smoother and it is a CRACKING bit of kit. My space will be very small for storage and it seems sensible that I build a tote-kit or luggable box for it all.

Post here, message me on the forum or message me on the Great Satan: WoodPixel - Home | Facebook

I presume by Veritas LA smoother you mean the bevel up variety? I only ask because there were 2 versions of this plane. The earlier one (with flat sides, suitable for shooting board) had a slightly narrower blade - I owned this version, but sold it when the second variety of Veritas smoothing plane came onto the market (one with small side wings, can't be used on a shooting board).

I swapped mine out because the newer version used blades that were interchangeable with their LA BU jack plane (which I also bought). One set of blades, sharpened with different bevel angles as you suggest, serves both planes. I use their PMV-11 steel blade for the high bevel angle one to get a longer lasting edge, and I think A2 for my standard and ultra-low bevel blades. The same blades are also usable in their LA BU jointer, but I couldn't justify Veritas for a plane I don't use so much and bought a conventional Woodriver #7 instead at about half the price.

If you have the correct LA BU smoother, getting the LA BU jack to use blades interchangeably is a no brainer. Incidentally, the LA BU jack is my most used plane - you won't regret getting one !

I have this one: Veritas Tools - Bench Planes - Low-Angle Smooth Plane ... the Low-Angle Smooth Plane

I REALLY like the way the mouth opens up, the little tweaking knobs on the side so I can align the blade properly (one thing I find particularly difficult for some reason) plus my giant hands (good for strangling, useless for violin) can grasp the thing properly..... on ALL other planes the web of my thumb/forefinger would jamb up under the handles and metal adjusters, such as on the Stanley, and I could not stand using them for long. The Veritas changed all that.

Tell you what though, all those blade options absolutely do my head in! Im going to need a chart or write it all down!

Ahhh - that's the first version I mentioned above. A most excellent plane, but the blade doesn't fit other planes in the current BU "family" as far I know.

The second version looks like this

Veritas Tools - Bench Planes - Bevel-Up Smoother Plane

Quite a bit heavier and a wider sole (both desirable in a smoother), but can't be used on a shooting board. I use the BU jack for shooting instead. Blades interchangeable between this BU smoother, the BU jack, and the BU jointer.

I have a couple of Veritas dovetail saws, almost unused, surplus to requirements. Can't remember which ones they are, but will dig them out over the weekend if you're interested.

I went over to Japanese pull saws for fine work, and now don't use anything else.

Also have a Veritas block plane that I never use (too big - got the LN ones instead).

Trouble is it's the fanciest one they make, wind-tunnel tested to have lowest possible drag coefficient...

Veritas Tools - Block Planes - DX60 Block Plane

Also virtually as new, with an extra blade I think.

    Hi WP
How are you holding the Stanley style plane?
Do you extend your Right index finger (I'm assuming that you are right handed) outside the rear handle? Placing it alongside the blade.
    If no, try that grip.

And if left handed, extend the left index finger

My "bling" version is a LN white bronze 102. Was my piece of "silver" for our 25th wedding anniversary. A sweet little plane.

Actual silver might have been cheaper! 1Kg of 99.99% is only $860

I get to say "Nah" again.
I think I paid well under AUD $200 for mine. (It was while the AUD was high relative to the USD, so it might have been well under AUD $150 including postage.)

so overall much much cheaper than 99.99% Ag
