You answered your own question and made the right choice.
As per the big bold banner at the top of all Market Place Forums and Threads (also below with enlarged bits) PM's are not to be used to buy, "I'll take it" is the only way that should be used to buy item(s).
However in this case the first chance to buy is with the OP as he was the one advertising wanted to buy.
Hope this clarifies things for everyone.

Just to be clear, it's tomartomau's thread, so he has obviously complete rights in his thread, I simply pm'ed a poster in his thread expressing my interest if the OP didn't buy it as per the posters comments.
If KahoyKutter had've posted a thread selling it himself, then I would have posted in his thread that I'll take.

Honestly I've felt for a while the two should just be combined. We don't see enough traffic for them to be a problem in the for sale section and it's far more likely they'll be seen there. Happens on a lot of forums, the FS section is busy and active and the Wanted section is a ghost town.
It makes sense to a certain extent. If someone wants to sell something they'll create a for sale thread, I sell a ton of stuff online and can't ever remember thinking 'i'll go see if I can find some wanted ads for this item".
