Quartersawn oak
Hey all,
I’m after some quartersawn oak if anyone has any available?
Ideally I’d need it around 220mm wide and at least a 2m plus length.
If anyone has some for sale please let me know.
Cheers

If you find some, let me know too. I've asked at timber yards here in Brisbane and no one imports quartersawn white oak Apparently sometimes there is a quartersawn board mixed in by accident, I had a look at the end grain of several packs, no luck. And I don't need a container load so no medullary rays for me. 220mm might also be a stretch for a single board.

You can probably still buy it as a veneer at George Feathers in Melbourne. They only sell packs or bundles though . 24 or 36 sheets or some number like that . I bought a pack and have veneered onto solid oak to get the look I needed .

As you have guessed, the combination of quartersawn and 220mm wide is a big ask (literally). Depending on the thickness required, and if nothing else eventuates, it occurs to me you could look at oak floorboards and butt them together lengthways to achieve your width. It may mean running them through a thicknesser to remove a visible join as there is normally a slight bevel to the edge, to remove the ribbing on the back and also the finish.
There is still the issue of quartersawn. Such timber tends to be backsawn as the recovery is both easier and slightly higher in what has become an expensive commodity, but you could get lucky. There is sometimes a choice of solid boards as well as engineered timber, which has a thick veneer.
None of this is going to be cheap!

Quartersawn oak
Thanks all for the replies. Brittons timber’s here in Sydney reckon they stock it on their website, I’ll give them a call and see. Otherwise I’ll look at importing from overseas but I don’t see that being cheap!
Update- forget important from overseas, almost $1000 in shipping!

Well I didn’t have to go far to find some! I was going through my timber stash and found 2 small slabs of oak that I got a while back. I’ll choose the best grain and use them for a largish dovetail box.
