Wanted - Stanley/Record #7 Jointer Plane
Doing hand tools only while I'm locked out of the shop so looking to add a #7 to the lineup, preferably Stanley but will consider Record as well. Must be parts complete, I want to get it lapped and sharpened the day it arrives
Let me know what you've got, thanks!

Actually just realised I have a Lie Nielsen Large Scraper plane I'm looking to offload as well, perhaps a trade could be entertained.

I have a Stanley No. 7, 'SW' blade, looks rough but it's complete and perfectly functional. Someone has taken a wire brush on a drill/grinder to it at some stage though, so the sole will need some work if you want it lapped (not sure why you'd lap a jointer, but anyway...)

Thanks mate I'll keep you in mind, I fear that may be beyond my skills though. Out of interest why wouldn't you lap a jointer? Is it because it's such a large surface area?

I couldn't see any use at all in lapping a jointer, running it over some fine grit sandpaper on a thick and firm board to remove some light dings or marks I could understand, but the jointer is hardly a precision tool requiring precision lapping IMHO.
Generally it just needs to be reasonably flat over the length, which unless it's been badly abused it usually will be.
But, I could be wrong, my wife often tells me I am.

Ahhh right sorry I'm probably using the wrong terminology. I just get some sandpaper on a long piece of glass and sand it until the sole is mostly flat.

That makes more sense. Lapping is what you do to get surfaces to a level of flatness measured in nanometers
With a big enough piece of glass and some 80 grit I think you'd get the bulk of it out pretty efficiently. I could skim it in the mill at work, but not for another couple of weeks.

Hi Bueller,
When my Dad passed away a while back I ended up with a couple of double ups and a No7 was one of them. It has a little surface rust but nothing that won't clean up easily.
If you are interested that we could work out a price
Rick

So once you sort the No 7, there's also the No 8 to get! ;-)

Rick old chap, Im also keeping an eye out for a #7, same reasons as Beuller
I've zero urgency, but this thread piqued my interest... might you have a price? Happy to receive it via IM if you dont wish to make it public.
I'm like OP - looking to do a bit of rough work and need a warhorse before I use the show ponies.

I have a number 7 Stanley I believe, which I bought new some 15 years ago. Never used it in anger, never used it at all really. How much are you looking to spend. I think I want about $250 plus postage/shipping.
Regards,
Rob
