Default Timber supply Melbourne (non - Australian species)

    Hi,

Hopefully i'm posting in the right place.

I'm somewhat of a beginner woodworker. My background is in automotive/panel beating but I've recently learnt to enjoy woodworking.

The problem i have is I don't know where to buy timber from. More specifically non stock(Bunnings) Australian species.

I've been looking for walnut, oak etc and i've hit a brick wall.

Where in Melbourne (S.E. preferebly) can i get american etc species of wood? Not really full slabs as i don't think i'm at the stage of being able to cut one up succesflly.... yet.

    Thanks in advance.

Hazlewood and Hill in Burwood is a good start:

Furniture Timber - Hazelwood & Hill

Matthews Timber in Knoxfield is another one:

Timber Supplier Melbourne, Exotic Timber Brisbane, Timber Sydney

Britton Timbers in Dandenong is another:

    Timbers

In general though you might be somewhat surprised at the price of furniture grade timber!

    cheers, Ian

    Thanks Ian,

I'll check them out. Curretnly i'm stuck with Bunnings, Mitre10 and Tile Importers for timber.. Unless i want Tass Oak, and well, Tass Oak.... there isn't much of a range....

    Steve.

Tassie Oak/Vic Ash is pretty under rated timber, sanded well and some coats of Danish Oil it looks absolutely magic! Beautiful for furniture or moldings.

A really beautiful Aust timber and a joy to work with is Southern Myrtle, well worth looking out for, last lot I got from Mathews was around $40 L/M for 200 x 50.

    cheers, Ian

Yeah nothing against Tass Oak, it's just i'd like to mix it up a bit, i need some other colours etc... I did hit up a few recylced timber places and grabbed some odds and ends, but they all have the same stuff...

There's some here: American Black Walnut Right in the marketplace. I believe the same seller has a fair stash.

Global Timbers. We used them pretty much exclusively for US species at my old work

Provans, Clifton Hill carry DAR Tas Oak. 110x32 @ $21 pm. Mathews for exotic, great products & great service! Side of the road for occasional gems. Macrocarpa is widely available & good, stable wood

Mathews in Scorsby keep some imports. Give them a call and see what they have in stock before going there to find out.

    Hi Steve

I often get timber and sheet materials from Uptons; prices usually very good, but quality varies:
Variety Of Timber By Uptons, High Quality Construction Products

Some of their stores also have recycled timber - can be great, but watchextremely carefully for nails, etc.

For harder tasks, I often make a "practice" component from a cheap timber before I risk the more expensive woods.

    Cheers

    Graeme
