Hi Jim
thanks for the offer. Unfortunately (or fortunately for me) I have been offered one yesterday by another member. If I hadn’t committed to this I would have been very interested.
Cheers
Ron

I have been using the Carbatec half-speed - which is actually by Axminster, and not sure if it is the same as Vicmarc - for many years (it has not been sold by CT for some years). Solid as a rock, balanced, and silent. It is 1 hp and drives two CBN wheels with ease. It is an excellent bench grinder. You purchased well.

Hi Derek
It seems like the Carbatec, Axminster, and Vicmarc were all clones of the same grinder. Vicmarc stopped selling their version several years ago because they were having a lot of warranty claims. I have a wood turner friend here on Macleay Is who had to have his first Vicmarc replaced because the spindle on one end was not concentric with the bearing.
The reason I wanted a slow speed grinder was to slow down the rate of metal removal when using a CBN wheel. When wood turning frequent sharpening is often required to get a good finish and one really wants to remove as little metal as possible to just restore the edge. I found that with my high speed grinder it was too easy to remove too much metal.
The Carbatec machine I am getting from Ian hopefully will serve me well. Thanks Ian

Ron, the CBN's are fairly aggressive initially but soon become less so with use. Mine has become markedly less aggressive over a period of time almost to the point of me buying a coarser wheel or putting it on a full speed grinder.

Hi woodsurfer
Sorry but Vicmarc stopped selling this machine several years ago. I checked with them before I placed the wanted ad.
