Default ELU TGS Compound/Mitre Flip Saw - Free but needs work (maybe!)

Hi all, I have an ELU TGS 172 flip saw with a couple problems but still working fine I'm happy to pass on as I recently picked up the newer TGS-173 model. I bought this saw brand new about 35 years ago, and at the time it was absolutely the ducks nuts, so I'm really loathe to just scrap it!

It has two problems, the first one being really easy to fix:

1 - the steel cable connecting the handle to the retractable blade guard broke about 15 years ago, and was replaced with a nylon cord, which broke about 5 or so years later, leaving the guard in the retracted position. This is a safety issue and doesn't affect operation at all, but is really easy to fix.

2 - there is a slight wobble, which I'm not sure is the blade, or the arbor, so it just means I never used it for very fine detail work.

The saw comes with the standard (quite solid) ripping/parallel fence, the special attachment to flip it to ripping mode, and an extra long newly fitted mains lead as I was using up until a few months back.

It has a belt driven induction motor so is orders of magnitude less noisy than most other brushed motor saws. And has really good dust extraction ports.

I stopped using the riving knife a couple decades ago and have since forgotten which "safe and unforgettable" spot I put it in, but if you need one it would be pretty easy to butcher another to fit or grind a new one from a bit of steel sheet.

The pic shown is just a generic one as I need to get this out of the shed to be able to take any pics, but beer got in the way!

I have kept the steel legs from it for my new saw, but can give 4 matching steel legs, (2 of which were cut down a few inches to have wheels fitted, not a bad idea).

With the current climate (and paranoia of neighbours), pickup can be from Hawthorn during the day (on some days each week), or Waverley Gardens S/C in Mulgrave at an agreed time.

Despite the couple of issues, these are such a fantastic and really useful saw!

    cheers, Ian

I know, but it never bugged me enough to do much about it. It's pretty amazing though that these sell as high as they do, and that pretty much all the parts are available for such an old saw. I think it was around 1983/84 I bought this from memory, it cost much more than my car (1971 HQ Monaro coupe) at the time!

I bought mine 30 plus years ago second hand. They are a really great saw especially if fitting out a house. Being able to use mitres and to rip architraves etc makes them a great saw. That cable fix is easy (I have had to do it twice, just wear and tare) I have changed the bearings on the spindle as well as the motor and it is still giving accurate cuts.

Any one wanting a good saw that excells in both modes, miters and rips, you will get good service from this machine. One thing that limits is it does not have a slide function like current style saws have so cutting miters 120mm wide but you can work around it.

***I have no connection to the seller. I am just a satisfied owner and user of a great saw
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

I've put together a homemade table saw for the purpose of cutting up a few cabinets at home. Just a circ under a sheet of ply parallel. I would love a new table saw but just can't afford one right now and my boss won't lend his out as it got misused the last time a worker took it home.
    Thanks

    It's all yours then!

I have no idea where the riving knife is but I did find the blade guard (for when you make/buy one) and I also found the special wrench to undo the blade assembly.

If you can pm your number I'll give a buzz tomorrow to sort out pickup.

    cheers, Ian

Take the blade collars off and rub them on a good fine flat diamond stone, the amount of saws I’ve seen that have wobbly blades because of a fine burr or build up of crud on the collars I couldn’t count. Usually fixes the blade issue.

No, not that good really, he brought a slab, and as I've never met a beer I couldn't drink, I very gratefully accepted! ;-)

Finally looked over the saw today. Nice saw! Gave it a rough clean and gave it a spin. Holycrap! this thing is more quiet then the dewalt from work! Spun it into mitre. Nice but it'll only be used for table saw predominantly.

Once again thanks for the saw Ian. It's a nice find and an awesome addition to my tools collection.

    I'll attach pics soon.
