It can be hard work to get rid of the dimple; many people still leave something that can be felt or seen in adequate light which detracts from the box. They either still leave a bit of a dome or go too far and make a dish.

Personally, I like spend the effort to make the bottoms of boxes smooth, but leave a simply decorated dimple inside the lid. As Tony said, it can make an otherwise boring surface more interesting. And it's easier.
Geez, Andy, don't let the newbies (me included) get off too easily!

If you can turn a flat base (or lid), time after time, you're half-way there..... IMHO of course.

That said, from what I can gather, if you are adding a finial, the extra meat in the lid can be helpful. Raffan does a nice decoration there - sorry, no photos.

It can be hard work to get rid of the dimple; many people still leave something that can be felt or seen in adequate light which detracts from the box. They either still leave a bit of a dome or go too far and make a dish. The dimple is on the lid and I turned the base cavity instead of drilling.

Personally, I like spend the effort to make the bottoms of boxes smooth, but leave a simply decorated dimple inside the lid. As Tony said, it can make an otherwise boring surface more interesting. And it's easier. Once again this is what the rum gods instructed me to do
My dimple was inspired from Raffan DVD as it was my first box I did not want to spend to much time on decorations or wall thickness I thought (rum gods) that if I could get the basics correct first then I could play with the fancy stuff. By basics I mean remember to make a lid, Get the lid to fit nice and tight but not too tight (still need work on that one) and to achieve a close grain match.
I hopefully will try again this weekend so I will inform the rum gods of the great advice given and see what we can come up with
I think I will make a box for my freind this will give me insperation to be extra fussy

Rum Pig, I wasn't trying to be too critical. Your first box was a lot better than mine! But you did ask....

I had a box lesson from Ken W a while back. His instruction was great. And at the end of doing all the "basics", he showed me a few neat little tricks ie decoration, that take a basic box up a notch. Some nice little stepped beads on a lid for example that only took an extra 5 minutes.

I'm sold now on the extra detail and I'm only on box no 12. Something to think about anyway for your next box.

And remember, people (not just turners) always look at the base. So decorate it too. (Ken W says two lines, not three, otherwise you have to measure).

Sorry if I have come across the wrong way I'm not upset in any way and you can be as critical as you like(I did ask), it is all free information for me so I will lap it up and that is what this challenge is all about sharing info All I was trying to do was explain my thoughts at the time.
I do like the idea only putting 2 lines that is a keeper for me
As I said earlier I will be making my next box for a friend it will be interesting to compare the 2
    Cheers Rum Pig

You must have different Rum Gods up there. The last time I had a chinwag with 'em it was along the lines of their saying "Don't bother getting up. Your glass is still half full and the lawn is nice & comfortable..."

A good plan. It's when you start getting fancy that all sorts of unexpected problems start to rear their ugly heads.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
