The lid is a bit to tight so I will need to remount it and take a fine shaving off. I did rush this a bit but I got a good fell for the way they go together so the next one should be a bit better. I was going to make the base a bit longer but the black wattle was hard as a rock so I cut it short.
Please fell free to criticise this effortCheers Rum Pig

Good one Rum Pig
Working out the steps is the main thing isn't it?
Don't be in a hurry to refit the lid. Give it a few days for the wood to settle down. I've got one that started tight that is now about right and one that started right is now a bit tightKeith

Love love love the insert! Very Aussie
Wattle and that insert - going for the tourist trade?
Looks like a lovely box to me!

Rum Pig,
A very, very nice first effort. Like Eliza, I like the insert too. And the shape.
Now, some cricitism. The walls of the box are way too thick. The wattle will hold if you go thin, very thin - but you've got to watch for heat cracks (I'm still learning on that one).
Can I suggest you turn exactly the same box and take out a lot more wood. It will take a little longer but I'm sure you'll see an immediate improvement in the finished box.
I forgot to add, you must get rid of the dimple.Last edited by jefferson; 6th August 2009 at 09:33 AM. Reason: Additions

What is wrong with the dimple
I know it was very thick but as it was my first I thought I play it safe the next one will be thinnerCheers Rum Pig

Rum Pig,
The problem with the dimple is that you haven't decorated it. It's hard to have a perfectly flat base, so many turners (including Raffan) leave the dimple and decorate it, just to show that it was intentional.
Others may disagree....

Nice work
A alightly tight fitting lid is certainly better than a slightly too loose one

Hi Rumpig
To m the dimple works it gets away from the boring flat surface here is a photo of inside one of Hans boxes .

For a first box, that's nicely done. 'Tis better to err on the side of safety and have something to show for your efforts besides a pile of splinters and, maybe, a bruise.
It can be hard work to get rid of the dimple; many people still leave something that can be felt or seen in adequate light which detracts from the box. They either still leave a bit of a dome or go too far and make a dish.
Personally, I like spend the effort to make the bottoms of boxes smooth, but leave a simply decorated dimple inside the lid. As Tony said, it can make an otherwise boring surface more interesting. And it's easier.
