Default Soft jaws for scroll chuck

Ok, you guys and gals are having a bawl making heaps of boxes, and doing really well I might add , but I can't turn anything bigger than a pen for a while yet due to my op

So, here is my input, a helpfull hint I hope .

Some of you are making jam chucks, that work really well, but here is what I use that I find a bit easier. I convert my scroll chuck to soft jaws. In my case with shark jaws, but this will work on most jaws. I got a small length of electrical cord (three strand) and stripped out the wires. Then I simply cut it to length to suit the jaws and split them down one side. Then just simply put them on the jaws, with either a flat on the inside whilst gripping the outside of your box (shown), or flat on the outside when gripping the inside of your box. Hope this makes sense. They hold there on there own without glue.

These work well on not just boxes, but pepper grinders, small bowls, handles etc. Just make sure you only use nip-up pressure on the chuck, to avoid splitting your box, especially when grippung the inside.

Sorry for not commenting on all your individual boxes, there have been too many to keep up with

    Cheers
    Neil

Does the diameter still need to be reasonably close to the jaw's diam? ( wonder if there is any of that kicking round some where. )

Not really, but closer is better, as it distributes the pressure better

Thank you! I've been using rubber bands, but on soft material like jacaranda and red cedar it can still mark.

Now I have another excuse to go to bunning. What a shame

You can also use thin strip of fabric/carpet protectors that are used under furniture to not marr timber flooring. It is quite thick and has an adhesive side to stick to the jaws. The big B sells it.

I checked Bunnings for the cable, they didn't have anything big enough in the electrical section - was I looking in the wrong place?

    probably

Seriously though - I'm surprised the Big B doesn't have triple core flat cable... Or is it more of an electrical wholesaler type item? Is there a JR Turks or similar near you? They would definitely have it.

Bunnings used to sellit by the meter

I'm sure a couple of gals should be able to con a sparky out of a bit of cable

If not, look for your nearest building site, there is nearly always some in the skip bins.

    Hi Eliza

You should be able to get what you want at most building sites from the skip or working electrician. By the way 'sidle' means to ease up to someone.
