    Default Floor suggestions

    Hi all,

Been some time since I was on the forum, however I have a new workshop area approaching completion, and I'm looking for some advice based on member's experience.

Space is 7.5m x 4.5m, with ply lining (figured I'll be drilling into it, and would constantly dint Gyprock) and yellow tongue MDF floor (suspended floor and I couldn't justify the cost of a slab - will also be easier to bring in floor mounted extraction).

Any recommendations for finishing the floor?

    • Could just seal the MDF, but with the plywood walls, feels a bit same/same?
    • Vinyl sheet or tiles? Easy to clean, but maybe not too durable? Be a bit of a mess to replace if glued down (as it should be)?
    • Interlocking PVC tiles?

Any other suggestions / recommendations / personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

    Photo's attached.

    Fletch

    Looks great - well done!

You could seal the floor with a colour?
It depends how dirty you are going to be but if its just sawdust then white looks classy and helps improve lighting.
If you are going to be repairing stuff like engines then maybe use a slightly darker colour - I used a mid blue colour - not good for lighting..

I guess it depends on how much you like to have stuff permanently plugged in but FWIW I can see right away you don't have enough power points . In my (6x4m) shed extension I had 9 double 10A and 2 x 15A GPOs installed and which resulted in the use ofexpander boards on 7 of the 10A GPOS. I've since added 4 more 10A and 3 15A GPOs. It would have been better to run the power outside the ply lining in large conduits up near the ceiling. That way you can add extra power points to exactly when you need then. Some drop down power points in the middle of the celing would also have been useful - just get the sparky to wire 2-3 in the ceiling and add the suspension extension later. Same with lighting - its better to get the sparky to just wire power points in the ceiling and then add something like LED panels to more specific locations.

My breaker box for the extension originally contained 5 breakers (other part of shed has a separate breaker box with 2 breakers) now teh breaker box has 9 breakers!

Anyway I cant speak too loudly as I did what you did (my shed walls are lined with a mix of Miniorb, Gyprock and ply) and have had to rip sheets off to get at the wiring underneath. Fortunately my ceiling is not lined and I can easily get at that and have run most of the new wiring via the ceiling.

    Cheer Bob,

Was thinking coating might be the best option. I would lean towards a light grey though? - white seems like asking for trouble (would need to take my boots off!), and no engine repair in this space requiring a more forgiving colour.

Not a fan of acrylic or alkyd floor coatings due to wear resistance, so would probably use waterbased epoxy with clear coat over the top. Also inclined to cut a line (slitting disc) through the finished coating in line with MDF board ends - only along the sub floor joist direction, not perpendicular - to allow for any movement - filled with sealant?

I hear you about the power. Sparky already thought I was over the top with 7x2 GPOs. Fortunately have ceiling access for any additional power from above - the twelve downlights can also be upgrade in wattage to increase lux if required. Also have 3 phase to the switch board, and easy access to the sub floor for any in-floor power. Regardless, it will be a step up from the 3 GPO's I currently have!

Light grey was what we used at the mens shed. Works well for the woody area, not so good n teh MW area.

Not sure I would bother. If it cracks it's likely to crack along the weakest direction which is not along the joists.
