Thread: BobL's shed fit.

It's been pretty warm here in perth this last week which has spurred me on to get the shed AC installed.

The AC is a freebie from my sister's place that they are demolishing.

I should have done this before summer started but I was hoping to install the AC in one of the walls of the old part of the shed and besides, I wanted to insulate and line the older part of the shed first so that it would not take as much juice to run. Anyway - as I was working on something else in the shed a few days back when it reached 39º I thought - why don't I install the AC now and then I can insulate and line the old part of the shed with the AC cooling the place down rather than just sitting on the back veranda taking up space and annoying SWMBO. Unfortunately I had to use some valuable wall real estate in the new part of the shed but of course it has to go somewhere.

I did try running the unit before I installed it and it worked fine. Then when I installed it it would not run. After some mucking about I found a lump of foam rubber was jamming the main condenser fan. Moving the unit during the installation must have dislodged the rubber allowing it to jam the fan. Anyway it's all good now!

That must have been one almighty re-leaf after all the trouble of fitting it.

The air con worked fine today but with the DE outside the shed the AC won't work too well a the DE will suck all the cold air out of the shed. My plan is to do dusty work in the early mornings and mechanical (service and sharpen chain saws) and hand tool work in the heat of the afternoon in the air con. if and when the Fremantle doctor comes in I'll open up the shed and work it out from there.

Today I worked on the electrics in the old part of the shed. Added a 15A line from the breaker box to the wall next to the the TS and router and ran the mains cable under the concrete floor in the PVC duct I had prelaid there. All good and no cables across the floor or dropping down from above.

Wow, you've done a lot since I looked in last Bob. I have a little AC like that in my shed too. I have it in the main workshop area which then leaves the outside area for sanding and machinery dust extraction etc. Inside on those scorchers I'll do my hand cut jonits, finishing, sharpening, resting, lunch etc Makes life bearable on those scorchers. Handy being able to close off and isolate different areaas of your shed or workshop. Looking good mate.

Arrh, what are the vice grips doing attached to the frame above the AC? Is this a new tool rack system?

Good idea, I was thinking of setting up a heavy curtain that would enable me to separate the old part of the shed from the newer part (AC is in the new part). That way the AC wouldn't have to work so hard on the really hot days.

I saw that in the photo and wondered if someone would notice. The grips were holding the head of a 10 mm bold that goes right through to the outside and forms a part of the external AC support system. The grips were only there while I was tightening the nut on the outside.

Hi Bob,

Your shed is going to be a real refuge with all the fruit, services, insulation, aircon. Hell it is better setup than my house. The aircon will be a big bonus I reckon. I bet you can't wait to get it finished, (or nearly finished as a shed is always evolving).

Am kicking myself I did not grad two similar units I helped my mate rip out, tossed in the skip and then he told me that they were still in perfect working order, Doh!!!

Thanks Pops - yep - heaps of fruit, maybe even a fruit salad. One thing that not everyone understands is that the reason I'm going to all this trouble instead of, eg, making picture frames, is that I really enjoy the process of making all the fruit. It's like building a big cubbyhouse. This morning SWMBO wanted an ETA for the first picture frames !

Like this under floor DE duct and power cable for my TS router combo.

The red line represents the power cable blue line represents the 150 mm dust extraction duct (still not connected to the saw)

I was going to hard wire the power cable but decided to install 2" PVC pipe so I could run a custom made 15A extension cord through it. Here's the start up against the wall. The white PVC cap pops off and the cord or other stuff can be easily passed through the pipe.


At the front of the saw I installed a 15A twin GPO one for the saw and the other for the router.

Very impressive. I am glade to see a few fire extinguishers around your shed, I haven't noticed many in other peoples shots.
One concern are those single insulated wires between the double 15A GPO and the plug top or is it just the angle and lighting making it look that way? To comply with regs they should be a bit of sheathed flex.
Anyway a good effort all round.

Thanks for the tip off. I do have amongst my midden a box full of offcuts of felxi conduit that I will use a piece of to cover those up.

Re: Fire extinguishers, I have two, plus i have a fire blanket. I have had a small fire in my shed caused by ants, sawdust and a rainstorm. story goes like this, 9 am saturday morning and it's raining heavily when a circuit breaker trips, check the house and unplug everything, still no go, then I remember that this CB was also the one that powered the shed. Check the shed and open the door to find a GPO located under the window smoldering nicely and smelling of burn plastic and ants. What had happened is the GPO had over the years partially filled with fine sawdust and then the ants must have moved in and set up shop. The storm then sent rain under the window and into the GPO which dissolved some ant dung and provided a current path from the live to neutral which set the saw dust smoldering for long enough before the live to earth shorted and jumped the CB. I guess we were lucky I was home to see and stop it.

Now that the air con is in I can really get stuck into shed reno even when it's hot but unfortunately I haven't worked out how to the the air con to attend silly season social occasions for me yet.

These last few days I have been working on insulating the rood of the old part of the shed. Now I know why this is best done while the shed is being constructed. Being pierced by the supporting wire mesh, breathing in fibreglass dust, having to more endless amounts of crap around, and getting hot a sweaty while working up underneath the ceiling. It took a lot longer than I though it would because I had to frame up the large gaps between the fibre-cement walls and the roof, and having to rewire the 3 fluoros.

Anyway the roof is now insulated and is working great. I had enough insulation left over to insulate some of the wall against which the DC enclosure abuts onto the shed.

I've also started adding in the extra studs that will be needed to pin the gyprock to. I managed to pick up 30 linear metres of Pine 35 x 70 from a mate for nothing and the rest will come from my stock of recycled Jarrah 3 x 2'''s.

The rest of the walls will be insulated with bubble wrap type insulation and where the door is on the RHS will become a window.

There are three existing cupboards and a workbench (currently on the patio) to go into that space so there won't be much left over once it is all done.
