Cheers CH. I've enjoyed following your thread as well. I've just done some more on my fume hood - I'll go takes some pics and post a follow up soon.

I did a bit more on the fume hood today. I attached the back half of the bottom and took the fan apart and gave it a coat of paint, made the fan stand and installed the fan. I also installed a light. Quiet a productive day really SWMBO has gorn away for a weekend so it's met and the dawg. Dawg keeps me pretty busy, one hour walk in the morning, stopping it from thieving stuff out of the shed, filling in holes it's dug in the lawn. Trying to rescue my prescriptions before she shredded them all.

Anyway here is how the fume hood looks now.

The fan controls were a tangle of wires, the switch was dicky, and it took a while to sort.
The light fitting came from the last kerbside pickup but the transparent top is from a dryer door.

Just running the fan for 5 minutes and although it was pulling nicely the bearing seemed to get quite hot. I wonder if it does not like running in that orientation. I can't tip it upside down because I can't invert the fan, it appears welded to the armature. I should be able to mount it vertically but it won't look as good!

Next I will make the side and front door of the fume hood.

Yep that's one of my 32 mm wide ripping blades.

Thanks, my MW lathe is pretty close to this bench and the doors should reduce the amount of crap from welding and grinding that gets onto the lathe.

Hmmmmm, just as you can't have too many clamps - you can't have a shed big enough .

All coming together nicely - still enjoying the journey - thanks.

    Bob,
Long time since i have been on here! simply havent had the time and woodwork has had to take a back seat for the past year or so.... BUT now i finally have my shed in the back yard like i was telling you i would one day (6x6 double garage )! ) whooo time to get dusty again!
Great to see your progress and have moved the bandsaw off the patio ! and the addition of another shed and several other new toys i see, nice work, a great read (plus i may want to come over and have a look). I now have a blank canvas so i need to set my shed up PROPERLY!!!! i wish i had all your experience with metal as well!
I hope you have been really well! hopefully i'll get onto the forums more now!
    cheers mate

Anytime - I'm usually around on weekends - just give me a call. BTW: Same invite applies to any WA forumites who want to have a butchers hook.

Just a bit of practice, some paint and a handy BIL to help fix up stuff ups!
Blank canvas is a fantastic way to start. One thing I would recommend is under floor power and dust extraction - it's brilliant.

It seems to have taken for ever (had a bad dose of gastro mid-week week which didn't help) but I finally finished making the front doors of the fume hood.

    Fumehood9.jpg
The doors are made from dexion shelving rescued from a skip at work. They were a bit wonky and needed a bit of straightening. The doors are supported by spring loaded bolts from the top, as well as by loose pin hanging hinges so the doors can easily be removed. I stupidly decided to make my own hinges and they took for ever)

Here's the spring loaded support bolt that pops up out of the way when not in use.

    One front door open

The doors fold all the way back but all folded up they look a bit like a couple of drunken sailors so I will be taking the front doors off especially because it is easier to do this than fold them back.

I stopped working on the fume hood today and started using it as is to weld up a ww lathe bench. I'll post some pics next time I get the camera out. Meanwhile I just want to report the fume hood works well and the amount of fumes in the welding end of the shed is much reduced and the "standard grey-black boogers in the shower at the end of the day" test was much reduced meaning I'm not breathing in anywhere near as much as I was in the past.

Now that my welding bay fume hood is operation I started working on my WW lathe bench.

I've got some specific dimensions written down to fit my small Woodfast Lathe but otherwise I'm just making the rest up as I go along.

    Here's the basic frame. 40 x 40 x 2.5 mm SHS
    WWlatheB1.jpg

The evening I worked on the feet. I was going to put wheels on it but because of dust extraction it's going to sit in a fixed position up against a wall so I just put some HDPE skid plates on the 8 mm steel plate leg bases. The levelling feet are turned from 40 mm solid steel bar and have a 1mm hard rubber covering glued on to provide a non-slip contact with the floor. The thread is cut from some 5/8" all thread rod.

The top is going to be made from some 35 mm thick Tassie Oak lab bench tops salvaged from the skip at work.

Great thread Bob, some really good ideas there
You mention the 'skip at work' a fair bit... wonderful things, a bit like Mitre 11!
There is a huge refurb going on in the science buildings here at the moment. I haven't been able have a good look in the skip as its surrounded by fencing. And I'm desperately trying to convince myself I don't need any more cr*p!!

    Cheers,
    Andy Mac
