Fairfield is a bit of a drive as I am just near dandenong, but I will see if I can check them out to see what there prices are like.

Look under 'pallet racking' instead of 'long span shelving'.

Second hand pallet racking is fairly common & reasonably priced, when I bought mine it cost less than any source of long span shelving and was ex-BBC hardware - Bunnings just traded it in & bought new stuff rather than re-paint it when they took over.

You probably won't find uprights in less than 600 deep, but you get shelf loads at around 3 tonnes per shelf.

I sort of need 600mm as it's only a 6m x 6m garage and having full size pallet racking would eat up a fair bit of space. Pallet racking is 1200mm isn't it?

Just thinking, but do you think it could be easily shortened? It all bolts together doesn't it?

The legs of pallet racking come in several sizes - front-to-back sizes are 450 (no one has it) 600, 900 and up to around 1200. The 600 stuff is what Bunnies use for a lot of their shelving, so its common. These come as a unit of 2 uprights & some cross bracing, all bolted together, which the beams slot into. Then there is the height, which starts around 2.4metres (8 foot) tall - my work space has a low ceiling so the suppliers just lopped off the excess 300mm before delivering it.

The other component - the horizontal beams - come in light, medium & heavy construction. I have some roughly 1, 2 and 3 metres long - they are all odd lengths, like 1.032metres, but are consistant within a system. The heavy duty beams are the 3 tonne rated ones. I have one set which is ~5metres long, a 2 and a 3 metre bay, and another with a 2 metre and a 1-&-a-bit bay.

Which brings us to the third determinant - the system. Just about every manufacturer of racking has they own proprietary system of slots & tabs, so you have to buy their product every time you want to expand.

The simple solution there is to ring the dealers & tell them you want 'X' metres of racking in 'Y' bays, 600 (or whatever) deep, 'Z' number of levels. They will look at their system (computer, cards or 'Old Jim') and tell you they can offer you for how much.

In Sydney I used 'Display & Storage Techniques' which was a group of new & second hand shelving dealers, which has since broken back up into its components such as Malouf's at Botany, DSG and Display & Storage at Moorebank.

That place at Moorebank is an absolute treasure trove

Never failed to find what I need from them, and the staff are very helpful when it comes to cutting stuff to length, etc.

I too am looking for workshop shelving options. I think I am better off with Long Span Shelving as it seems to come complete with shelving and whilst the loading is less than pallet racking it still seems fairly good at 360kg for a 2000x600 shelf.

On the weekend I also had a look at:

Seemed to be quite good and very similar to the ones listed on Ebay. Perhaps not as strong as industrial long span shelving or pallet racking but seems to be quite sturdy for home use.

I like the first link better with the additional shelf and the 18mm thick board (which has a water-resistant coating). Seems easier to replace the shelf if needed, either open or mesh or something else.
