Dust collection comes down to 2 choices:
1) Something to collect chips and keeping the place tidy. A vacuum cleaner or a small (1 or 2HP) DC - maybe several of these dedicated to 1-2 machines can do this.
2) You want to do the same as above and minimize the invisible dust which represents the majority of the health risk. To do this you need a minimum of 1000 cfm and 4000 fpm at the dust generation point. A 3HP can only do this for one machine at a time - do you want users waiting while others are using a machine? For 2 or 3 machines in use simultaneously 5HP (ie 3 Phase) is a minimum requirement
Most stated manufacturers ratings for air flow are for a DC with no bags and not connected to any ducting. For real airflow rates you can basically divide by 2.
Either way DC bags and filters do not capture invisible dust and merely recirculate this dust inside the shed, so something like a cyclone plus a HEPA filter is needed if the DC is used inside the shed. The simplest solution is to place the DC outside the shed and duct the extraction to the machines - for multiple machine use that's a minimum of a 5HP system.

Dust extraction
Thanks Bob have taken aboard your advice and will discuss this with the boys. My feelings are we might as well do it right at the beginning as have to keep up-grading later.
