    Default Erection

    Now I have your attention

For those who have bought a prefab shed did you put it up yourself or paid the shed mob to do it??

Shed is 6x6m with a roller door and PA door + owner supplied window and 2x skylight sheets.

I am at a cross roads as to whether I get Ranbuild to do everything inc. the slab and putting it up. Or put it up myself with the help of an experienced metal worker.

Cost to put it up is $1500

In some cases it comes down to "if you have the time".

I could have built myself but I wanted to spend my limited time in the fitting out so I had someone else build the base structure

Two kids, almost 2 and 3. Plus a full time job. But I can spare a weekend.

Take more than a weekend unless you can muster up several helpers. Best to take the time if you are doing it yourself. Kids though do like to see their DADDY doing things!

    Hi Onezero

I bought my shed from Ranbuild in Pakenham, Vic, and chose to have his installers do the job. I normally do everything myself but the good lady wife convinced me to part with the cash to have it done. It is a 9x7 and it took 3 guys 5 hours to do it. They did an amazing job and the feeling of going to work one day and coming home to a new shed was pretty awesome.

Happy to recommend the installer I used if you are in Melbourne.

Another thought: if things go pear-shaped, I think you will find that all the responsability will be on whoever put the thing up - if you pay them to put it up, anything that goes wrong is their problem/fault.

After putting up a 17.5m x 7.5m (with 17.5 x 6 awning) I would say a 6x6 would be childs play. I would still give it a couple of weekends though. If doing it yourself, I would recommend using some of the $1500 saving to get a makita 18v brushless impact driver.

Thanks for the feedback so far! I do like the idea of having it all up in one day. I spent about a month of weekends building the kids cubby house and it wore a bit thin on the family.

I already bought an impact driver, not a brushless variety though. Am I likely to burn through them putting it up am I?

I love doing things and having the kids see their old man do things. But I think in this instance I would rather see them make something for them IN the new shed.

I am in NSW so I don't think the installers will travel, thanks for the offer though.

Your quote of $1500 includes a 6x6 slab?

    I doubt it. A 5.1 x 3.5 m 100 mm reinforced slab cost me a grand!

Hence my surprise! A mate recently poured a 6x6 slab for just under 5k, including steel and pumper.

Yep, that seems ballpark. I had a 6m x 7m carport slab (115 deep) poured, including reo, anchoring the new slab's reo to the existing shed, and bobcat excavation for just over $4K.

And a cement path down the side of the shed to eventually build a timber store.

I wish. $3k for the slab not inc. leveling

Considering going the 5x6m option which is about $1500 cheaper and spending the extra on lining, heaps of light, plumbing for the future and work benches. What does everyone think?

    Exclamation

Putting up the shed should not be such a problem. If you are going to drill your bolt anchor holes I suggest you use chemi-weld bolts and not the Dynabolt type. With the anchor bolts so close to the edge you run the risk of splitting the concrete if you get too anxious with tightening the bolts

Really, it's abit like a giant jigsaw with fewer parts. Read the instructions, take your time and double check everything.

    Good luck!

I can really recommend using quality insulation, sealing the building and installing good ventilation. It amazes me what people spend on sheds and machinery but somehow dust extraction is an afterthought.

If you are building from scratch think about under floor stuff now. Even just putting some potential ducting (electrical and dust) into the floor can be incredibly useful.
