She is doing VERY well though and goes back to work in 12 days 10 hours and some minutes!
Ive been continuing on the Surprise project

    (Surprise!)

...... when I can and, while I’m currently more in the house than the shed, I’ve started scanning the 30,000 black and white and colour slides in the aircraft photo collection.
    Here’s 2 from tonight...

........ but to prove that I’m not totally obsessed with woodwork nor aviation, IF there are any non- aviation images on the roll, I will still scan them.....

Normal broadcast should resume on the morning of the day Mrs Fletty goes back to work!

PS, I have learned from Fence furniture who showed me that the Festool workshop vac does a fantastic job of domestic cleaning!

It's amazing how the human brain works and especially so if it is (slightly) OCD and removed from time pressure. As I noted earlier, I'm going to have to do something about retaining/restraining the pleated filters because they do not fit OVER the filter support rings but slip inside them. There was some force required to make them slip in but nonetheless, I don't want to open the door of the acoustic enclosure and find it dust filled with the pleated filters laying nonchalantly on the floor! Given the current lack of urgency, I came up with a system of folded metal brackets, threaded rods and easy-nuts. As I started to gather/purchase/scrounge the bits to make this Sydney Harbour Bridge solution, I posed myself the question of "what would I do if the VFD due next Friday arrived today?".....
Ladies and gentlemen, meet the new short-term AND long-term solution which cost me precisely........ NIL!

Now, where can I find ivory ratchet straps.............?

Its NOT been a good couple of days in Fletty’s Shed. I was in the machine section of the shed merrily jointing and thicknessing forest red gum for the SURPRISE project and, after a few hours of intense machining, I decided to take a short break. I opened the roller shutter door which I normally keep closed when I’m making noise to avoid annoying the neighbours, and I was greeted with a beautiful red sunset scene. The problem is that it was only 2 pm and the Sun was still shining down brightly on me and the red landscape surrounding the shed. The main door to the other part of the shed was wide open to let the sunshine in and I saw that the wonderous colours of sunset were glowing inside the shed as well!
Unfortunately the ruby red colours of sunset were, in fact, forest red gum dust that had spewed out of the dust collector enclosure all over the surrounding ground and trees AND the gentle breeze had blown a significant amount inside the shed as well
As prophesied above, one of the pleated filters had (presumably) been blown off its housing and this was the scene that greeted me when I opened the door to the enclosure...

I have cleaned outside the shed and the easy-to-get-at surfaces inside the shed as best I can but now I have to move everything on the shelves etc to clean both the item and the area around them. I have started making a more ‘robust’ clamping system to keep the pleated filter where it should be but, in general, I was feeling pretty miserable.

Cripes, what a mess! Maybe a bit of time with a leaf blower and a very good dust mask and other PPE and blow the dust out into the drizzly rain. Shouldn't upset the neighbours as the dust theoretically will just create slightly red gum coloured rain.

Actually, I can see this cleanup being reasonably entertaining to watch from a suitable distance.

    Hope it all goes well.

    Alan...

Oh no. A vacuum cleaner on reverse might shift most of the dust to more accessible areas. Can come and help clean tomorrow.

Thank you very much for the offer but, after cleaning all day yesterday and last nights soft rain, it’s all over bar the shouting. One plus however is that I now know that there are a few leaks from the enclosure INTO the shed ...... and I know where they are!
I’m doing a load of washing while Mrs Fletty is out and I could probably bottle the rinse water and sell it as Rose?

In another thread on pleated filters (PiFs) it was discussed that if a needed to be held PFs down using ratchet straps, it may be that the PFs are clogged beyond the usual. maybe even beyond use. According to BP they should have a back pressure of between 1 and 2"" of WC- around 1" WC when clean and approaching 2" when they need cleaning. Some folks are reporting between 2 and 3" even after deep cleaned and then needing to hold the PFs down with a ratchet strap . This suggests the filter is seriously permanently blocked and needs replacing as they do have a finite life time.

    Default Shed envy?

Due to my other major hobby, I scored an invitation to the Australian War Memorials storage and restoration facility which is not open to the public. I shall, from now on, refer to it s the AWM’s Shed ........ and I am beyond jealous!

AND, just to show that my 2 major hobbies don’t always compete for my time, here is Charles (C.E.W.) Bean’s desk......

Wow, that would have been a hoot!

But if it's not open to the public, who are all these dudes?

Those dudes were all ‘with me’. I was at a symposium where I reckon the mean age was 72 with a standard deviation of 2 years! I have NEVER seen so many pairs of corduroy jeans in one place in my life?
After the new aircraft shed, we wrangled our way into the military equipment sheds....

...... and I was in heaven. I never thought that I would EVER see an FT17 tank. In fact, I didn’t even know that there was one outside of Western Europe! *
I have now ended up with even more projects including research AND restoration as well as supplying some of my Father’s and my aircraft photos for others’ research projects and manuscripts. I needed something else to fill the vacant hours that I currently waste by sleeping!

Tonyz, I’m ashamed to say that I was in such a euphoric state (= hungover AND deliriously distracted) that I DIDNT EVEN NOTICE THE LOG?

    * one of the TOP SECRETS of WW1 was that the main drive wheel at the front of the track mechanism on the FT17 was made of timber and that a single rifle shot could disable the tank!

that Porter is a pretty nice looking plane, just weird without a vertical stabiliser and rudder - even though they normally look huge

I’m enjoying a ‘significant birthday’ weekend and one of the highlights has been a new shed apron made by number 3 daughter....
